A Look Back: PC vs. Seton Hall

Cartwright Ball in Front

Friarbasketball.com takes a look back at Providence’s second conference win of 2017.

Game: Providence vs. Seton Hall on 1-14-17.

Where the Friars Stood: PC was barely standing at this point. When we’d last checked in on the Friars they’d taken down Georgetown in their Big East home opener. That win upped their record to 1-2 in conference, but they fell to #10 Creighton during blizzard conditions (and without point guard Kyron Cartwright) at the Dunk, and blew a double-digit lead late at DePaul — in what was the low point of the season.

The Result: Behind a breakneck 19-2 run in the first half, PC raced out to a 16 point lead before Seton Hall tied it up with four minutes left in the game. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the final four minutes, but Cartwright would not let them fall.

In a tie game with 30 seconds remaining, he knocked down a jump shot while getting fouled to push PC ahead. Seton Hall would not score again, as Providence won 64-60.

What to watch for:

  • Cartwright was at his best in this one, scoring 20 points, dishing out eight assists, and turning it over just once in 37 minutes. Beyond the numbers, he set the tone and the pace, advancing the ball ahead with his speed and several fullcourt passes which led to easy baskets. He scored in a variety of ways as well — twice finishing while being fouled, connecting from beyond the arc, and hitting a couple of difficult floaters.
  • Rodney Bullock connected on four 3-pointers and led PC with 22 points. He, Cartwright, and Emmitt Holt (10) were the only Friars to score in double figures.
  • Hitting back. This season could have spiraled downward after the loss to DePaul and a pair of road games ahead (including at #1 Villanova). Cartwright played with an edge and seemed intent on sending a message to his younger teammates that this season was not yet finished.
