A Look Back: PC at Georgetown

Cartwright Scoop at Georgetown

Friarbasketball.com takes a look back at Providence’s trouncing of the Hoyas on the road.

Game: Providence at Georgetown on Jan. 16, 2017

Where the Friars Stood: Fresh off of a much-needed victory over an eventual NCAA Tournament team in Seton Hall, the Friars took to the road to play Georgetown.

The Hoyas opened conference play 0-4, but that record was a bit deceiving. They went to the wire with #17 Xavier and lost to #18 Butler in overtime, while their two other losses came on the road to Marquette and PC. All four opponents would make the NCAA Tournament in March, with Xavier reaching the Elite 8 and Butler a Sweet 16 team.

Georgetown was riding a two-game winning streak heading into this one, after drilling St. John’s by 28 and knocking off Connecticut in a rare January non-conference tilt.

For Providence, Kyron Cartwright was incredible from beginning to end against Seton Hall, and suddenly they had a chance to pull near .500 in Big East play with a win.

The Result: In their most complete effort of the season, Providence beat up on Georgetown, winning convincingly, 74-56. Cartwright was terrific once again, setting the pace in a near triple double effort (16 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds), while Rodney Bullock scored 22 points, and Jalen Lindsey was outstanding from deep.

In hindsight, this has the look of the Friars taking advantage of a bad opponent (Georgetown finished the season 5-13 in conference play, and closed the year losing eight of their final nine), but they weren’t playing terribly at the time. Their next three games came against #18 Xavier, #16 Creighton, and #11 Butler, and they won two of those three.

With the win Providence clung to their NCAA Tournament hopes, upping their record to 3-4 in Big East play, before heading off to play #1 Villanova on the road.
