Friar Staff at Hoop Hall Classic
- Updated: January 20, 2014
Wasting little time resting after the Friars impressive victory over Creighton, the PC staff was out in full force this weekend recruiting at the Spaulding Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, MA.
On Sunday Brewster Academy took on Wilbraham & Monson, and the entire Providence staff was out to see recruits Donovan Mitchell, Devonte Graham, and Jarred Reuter for Brewster and Curtis Cobb for Wilbraham & Monson.
Donovan Mitchell is a 6’2 combo guard who, along with Jalen Adams of Cushing Academy, may be the Friars’ top backcourt targets in the 2015 class. A borderline Top 100 player, Mitchell will wind up a consensus Top 50 player nationally before the year is through. He was very impressed that the entire PC staff was at the game. Here are some comments from Zagsblog on Mitchell’s performance and his reaction to the entire PC staff showing up for the game:
Providence head coach Ed Cooley and his whole staff were on hand Sunday night at the Hoophall Classic to watchDonovan Mitchell, a 6-foot-3 2015 combo guard from Brewster (N.H.) Academy.
“It was really nice,” Mitchell told SNY.tv after scoring 13 points in Brewster’s 91-73 victory over Wilbraham & Monson. “It shows that they are really interested in me.
Reuter is a rugged 6’8 PF in the 2015 class who would fit in nicely in a future Friar front court alongside Paschal Chukwu and Ben Bentil. Curtis Cobb is a 6’4 who has seen his stock rise dramatically over the past couple of months.
The Friars are in desperate need of adding at least one, if not two, point guards to their 2014 class. One of their major targets is Brewster’s Devonte Graham who, along with Tarin Smith, may be one of the best available point guards left in the 2014 class. Graham originally committed to Appalachian State and has not yet been released from his LOI. If Appalachian State does not release him he will have to sit out next year.
On Monday the PC staff was back at the Hoop Hall Classic to see Smith, as his St Anthony’s (NJ) team took on Paul VI (VA). Smith is a late bloomer and one of the best point guards still available in the 2014 class. Tarin seems to have very serious interest in PC and may commit if PC offers him a scholarship. He had a very solid game against Paul VI scoring 16 points. Here are some comments from the recruiting scouts that saw him play today:
Tarin Smith is a solid unsigned guard in 2014. Had 10 points at the half for St. Anthony (NJ) — some A-10, some Big East, some mid-major.
I’ve always liked Jersey City St. Anthony PG Tarin Smith. Good size and a playmaker who can score. One of best available. #hoophall
Tarin Smith picked the best game to show off his variety of facilitating skills off the bounce. Finishing in lane, dishing, running the show
2014 G Tarin Smith is playing well for St. Anthony’s. He’s always had the potential to be a very good player and is stepping into the role.
Overall this has been a very busy holiday weekend for the PC coaching staff, both on the court and on the recruiting trail. Hopefully their efforts will pay dividends for years to come.
