Just when Seton Hall thought they finally had their team back, Gene Teague went down with perhaps the scariest injury of the college basketball season. The 6’9, 270 pound center, who has been terrific this year, had his feet taken out from under him in Friday’s win over Lafayette, eventually being taken off in a stretcher.
Fortunately, the injury was just a “really bad concussion” according to coach Kevin Willard, leaving Teague’s status in question for Tuesday afternoon’s Big East opener at Providence.
If any team can feel Providence’s frustration when it comes to games missed this season it’s the Hall. Teague leads the Big East with six double doubles, is averaging 9.4 rebounds per game and is making 62% from the field — both good for second in the league. He was averaging 14.8 points, 13.2 rebounds and shooting 72% in the five games prior to the win over Lafayette, and already had a double double when he went down early in the second half.
Teague’s injury is the latest in a seemingly endless string of losses for Seton Hall this year, as on Friday they were playing with a full complement of players for the first time since Nov. 22.
At full strength, this is a team that could give Providence problems.
All league wing Fuquan Edwin is recovering from an ankle sprain that cost him three games in December (all wins for the Pirates), but he’s played the last two and he’s doing what he does best, coming up with 14 steals over those two games. He’s a dangerous scorer who already has a 35 point game this season. Friar fans will remember that PC made a strong recruiting push for Edwin after Gerard Coleman committed in the summer of 2009, but he eventually opted for the Pirates.
Sophomore guard Sterling Gibbs, a transfer from Texas who PC also recruited, has gone over 20 points on four different occasions, including 27 (3-4 from 3, 10-10 free throws) against Rutgers and 26 versus Oklahoma. He leads the Hall in scoring at 15.9 a game.
Freshman Jaren Sina was a top 100 recruit who plays 25 minutes a game. He’s part of a supporting cast with inside/out power forward Brandon Mobley (9.8 points, 5.9 rebounds), 10 ppg big man Patrik Auda and senior shooter Brian Oliver, who averages three 3 pointers a game, while making them at 41%.
The Pirates are 9-4 on the season, but have lost to the likes of St. Peter’s, Mercer, and Farleigh-Dickinson. They have defeated high-majors in Rutgers and Virginia Tech.
Providence finished 2-0 versus Seton Hall a season ago. Bryce Cotton had 23 points and nine rebounds in a 67-55 road win in January, while Kadeem Batts finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds in the final home game of a regular season — a 76-66 victory for the Friars.
Here’s a look back at both games:
