Ben Bentil Commits to the Friars
- Updated: September 30, 2013
As first reported by John Rooke of GolocalProv.com, Ben Bentil, the power forward from St. Andrew’s in Newark, Delaware, announced that he has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Providence College. He tweeted, “It’s all official now. I’m proud to be a FRIAR.”
Bentil chose the Friars over Georgtown, Miami, and Temple. He is ranked in the Top 100 nationally by just about all of the scouting services.
Landing Bentil shows that the Friars have taken yet another significant step up the recruiting ladder to becoming one of the major basketball programs in the country. Just three weeks ago PC lost out on one of their major recruits, power forward Abdul Malik Abu. Under previous coaching staffs when this happened the Friars would wind up settling for a border line high major player at that position.
Not anymore. Not under Ed Cooley. No more settling.
Instead, Cooley and staff went out and got a player who very well may wind up every bit the player that Abu is, if not better.
Bentil is a classic Ed Cooley type player in that he is very versatile. He already has a powerful Big East type body and is a monster under both boards. He has low post moves, but his game is much more than that, as he has a very nice shooting touch out to 17 feet. Like many other incoming Cooley recruits, expect Bentil to play multiple positions out on the floor.
We will have much more on the Ben Bentil commitment, but in the meantime, enjoy these mixtapes and a full game video of Bentil’s We R1 team taking on Abu’s Expressions team this past spring. Bentil finished with a game high 18 points in the win.
