Kyron Cartwright’s Best Quality? Competitiveness

Kyron Cartwright played like a 1st Team All Big East performer when his team needed him most over the past week.

In the closing six minutes against Belmont he tied the game twice on difficult drives, pulled PC to within a basket with 4:30 left, and, of course, won it by going the length of the floor and hitting a leaning 3-pointer at the buzzer for the win.

While Cartwright led the charge against Belmont with a late offensive flurry, the clinic came last night against a Boston College team with a terrific backcourt — a tandem he’d most certainly heard something about.

If we’ve learned anything about the senior guard it’s that his greatest strength is his competitive streak.

Look no further than last season.

Rhode Island was supposed to have the superior team, but Cartwright scored 19 points, and added eight assists and four rebounds in a PC victory. He left URI head coach Dan Hurley befuddled afterwards, “That’s sports, and that’s the type of thing that makes coaches go gray and lose their hair. Four 3-pointers in seven games and he made four today — all in the first half.”

We saw it time and again during Cartwright’s junior year. The team is a no-show at Butler, so he scores 26 points almost in disgust.

A road loss to DePaul was followed with 20 points and eight assists against Seton Hall and 16/11/9 at Georgetown — both Friar victories.

PC had never won at Marquette, so he scored 18 second half points in a one point victory in Milwaukee.

With the season in the balance at Creighton he knocked down a last second 3-pointer to keep Providence’s NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

I have little doubt that Cartwright heard the buzz about this BC backcourt. When he’s locked in and aggressive from the start, like he was Saturday night, the Friars have a different feel.

He finished with 14 points, nine assists, and four rebounds, despite missing the final eight minutes of the game with an undisclosed injury, but at that point the game had been decided.

The Friars were well on their way to a blowout victory, and Cartwright once again displayed the edge that has transformed a spring signee into the most vital cog in Providence.
