Friar Starting Five: Saturday Edition
- Updated: July 4, 2015
Here are links to five topics that may be of interest to Friar fans:
1. Coxhub’s Daniel James says that things are heating up at PC and URI this summer.
2. John Rooke has several interesting takes in his weekly Thinking Out Loud column.
3. It appears that the Alex Owens era at PC may be over before it even starts. Although there is no official word about his status Owens has retweeted several tweets from Tallahasee Community College basketball players congratulating him on joining their program:
S/o to my man @OwensAlexx for joining me and my boys, it's about to goooooo down

It has been known for quite some time that Owens may have problems qualifying academically in order to play Division One basketball this year. If Owens is not on the team the Friars will have 11 players on scholarship this year unless they pick up one more player before the start of the season.
4. On a more positive note I was in contact with Quadree Smith yesterday and he will be on campus Sunday for the start of PC’s second summer session. Here is a preview of what Friar fans can expect from their newest recruit:
5. It appears that Carson Desrosiers will have some familiar competition when he plays in Europe next year as Rhode Island native Erik Murphy has signed to play with Besiktas in Finland.
Off the Bench
Ed Cooley and the USA U19 team will be playing Greece in the semi-finals oh the U19 World Championships today at 1:30 ET. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
