A Closer Look: Breein Tyree
- Updated: June 25, 2015
Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key PC recruiting targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and offer updates on prospects that have been previously featured.
Prospect: Breein Tyree
Position: PG
School: St. Joseph High School
AAU Program: Sports U
Class: 2016
Overview:
Breein Tyree is one of the most athletic point guards in the 2016 class. He is extremely fast and is able to get to the rim and finish with ease. Here is an example of Tyree taking it strong to the basket:
Tyree has nice form on his outside shot but it is inconsistent at this point in his career. He has a great handle and is able to get by defenders with ease. Tyree still needs to work on his passing and getting his teammates more involved in order to become a top facilitator at the next level. Right now he is more of a shoot-first lead guard rather than a pass-first point guard.
What Others are Saying
ESPN says that “Tyree is a dynamic playmaking guard who shows flashes of stardom. He has good speed with the ball, a quick first step, the bounce to rise up and finish above the rim, as well as the body control to maneuver through multiple bodies and still finish with good touch. He’s got a ton of burst in his game, and can make plays regardless of the tempo of the game. He’s rarely bothered by contact and can also beat you with his jumper, making tough shots on the perimeter.” ESPN currently lists Tyree as a four star prospect.
Scout says that “Tyree is an explosive combo guard who can finish with the best of them. There is a lot of potential there.”
Rivals says that “Tyree makes shots from deep, is a good decision maker, and does a nice job on the defensive end of the floor.”
The Competition
Besides the Friars, Tyree is receiving strong interest from Maryland, Creighton, Iowa State, USC, and UMass among others. You can expect him to pick up more offers during the July live recruiting period.
The Bottom Line
Breein Tyree’s athleticism could remind some Friar fans of a young Kris Dunn. With this most likely being Dunn’s last season at PC the Friars will look to bring in a talented point guard for the class of 2016. Tyree could wind up being that guy. They offered him a couple of weeks ago and it will be interesting to see how closely the PC coaching staff follows Tyree and his Sports U AAU team during the July.
