Henton Leads PC Past Marquette

Henton vs Marquette

In his second to last game at the Dunkin Donuts Center, LaDontae Henton provided yet another tremendous performance to remember him by.

The senior scored 25 points and pulled down a season high 15 rebounds in PC’s 77-66 victory over Marquette, crossing the 1,000 rebound plateau in the process. He dominated the second half in particular, scoring 16 of his 25 points, making 7-9 from the field, and grabbing eight rebounds. Eight of his 15 boards on the day came off of the offensive glass.

“I hope our team takes on LaDontae’s personality coming down the stretch,” said Ed Cooley. “Because he was a possessed man today.”

“When you’ve got that senior sense of urgency… he willed us, especially when it started getting tight.”

Henton’s urgency has been on full display of late. He has been outstanding down the stretch for the Friars, scoring 22+ points in five of their last six games, leading PC to 20 wins for the second consecutive season.

And with Ryan Gomes looking on, he inched ever closer to joining Gomes as the only Friars to ever score 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in school history. If Henton doesn’t score point 2,000 on Wednesday at Seton Hall, he most certainly will when PC returns home for their regular season finale against Butler on Saturday.

Kris Dunn filled the stat sheet once again with 16 points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals, and PC got a lift Paschal Chukwu, starting in place of Carson Desrosiers who sat for the second straight game with a knee injury. The freshman made all three of his field goal attempts and grabbed six rebounds in 28 effective minutes.

“I don’t think people understand, not having a fifth year senior on the floor really, really hurts us.” Cooley said of Desrosiers’ absence.

“Systematically, we have to run different things because he controls the offensive side of the ball when we run things through our five man.”

Desrosiers remains day-to-day as he recovers from his injury.

Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski was frustrated that his team was “manhandled” on the boards, with the Friars finishing with a 45-25 advantage. 19 of PC’s rebounds came off of the offensive glass.

It was a far cry from when Buzz Williams’ teams would do as they pleased against the Friars on the interior. Marquette is a program in transition, but the Friars are a different team now as well.

The Golden Eagles made a late push behind the scorching shooting of freshman Duane Wilson (22 points on 7-10 from 3) and Matt Carlino who added 21, but they got no closer than five as Providence closed on a 6-0 run on six made free throws in the final two minutes.

Cooley seemed less than thrilled with his team’s effort over the final 15 minutes, twice citing a lack of maturity as a potential blowout became a two possession game in the final two minutes.

Once the aggravation of their late game sloppiness wears off, Cooley will have to be pleased to look up and see a team with 20 overall wins and 10 in the conference with two games remaining in the regular season. The Friars RPI stands at #22 nationally and they are a virtual lock for their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

And with his late season surge, Henton has assured himself of a selection on the Big East’s 1st Team. He’s averaging over three points per game more than any other player in conference play and now has five double doubles in which he’s scored over 20 points.

To the surprise of no one who has watched him over the last four years, Henton is closing his phenomenal Providence career with a flourish.
