This is obviously a great opportunity for the Friars. Last year’s Empire Classic field included Georgetown, Duke, Texas, and Cal, while the 2020 field will feature Villanova, Michigan, North Carolina State, and Baylor, assuming it has not been cancelled due to COVID-19. The year prior saw Syracuse, UConn, Oregon, and Iowa take part.
Providence won this tournament in 2017, defeating Washington 77-70 before crushing St. Louis, 90-63 in the final. Kyron Cartwright was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
