Penn 81, Providence 75

AJ Brodeur was far from an ordinary Ivy League recruit when he committed to Penn in July 2015. Brodeur earned scholarship offers from the likes of Notre Dame and Boston College, but eventually trimmed his final list of schools to Harvard, Yale, and Penn before picking the Quakers.

Steve Donohue had been recruiting him to BC before being fired and taking over at Penn, and over the past three plus seasons Brodeur has been among the most productive players in the country.

He was the best player on the floor in Providence’s disappointing 81-75 loss to Penn on Saturday.

It was an afternoon in which Providence seemingly could do nothing right. The Friars trailed 47-30 at halftime — a half that saw Penn shoot 57% from the field, while limiting Providence to 11-30 shooting.

PC trailed by as many as 19 in the second half, but seemed to be well positioned for a comeback at the 12 minute mark when Brodeur picked up his fourth foul after the Friars cut the lead to 10.

A Greg Gantt dunk 20 seconds later made it an eight point game, but Brodeur’s replacement, Jarrod Simmons converted a pair of foul shots to push the lead back to 10. For Simmons, this was a reunion of sorts. He played at Cushing Academy in Massachusetts alongside Providence’s David Duke.

Luwane Pipkins countered with a 3-pointer on the next possession and tried to slice the lead to four a few seconds later with another quick 3-point attempt that was off — thus kicking off a series of missed opportunities.

Ed Cooley looked as though he was going to lean on Nate Watson in Brodeur’s absence. Watson scored at the 9:30 mark to make it 56-50 and again 35 seconds later to keep Providence within six (58-52). Watson was then fouled with a chance to cut the lead to four, but missed both foul shots.

That’s when Donahue decided he couldn’t wait on Brodeur any longer, returning his big man to the lineup with just over eight minutes to play in a six point game.

Brodeur immediately stabilized things. He found himself with Maliek White switched onto him, but instead of forcing his own offense, the senior calmly found freshman Jordan Dingle alone for an open 3 that bumped the lead back to 61-52 at the 7:40 mark.

PC went back to Watson on the interior on its next possession, but he could not finish over Brodeur. Providence’s previous three possessions had gone: Watson layup, Watson layup, Watson fouled.

Donahue’s gamble was about to pay off.

Pipkins dribbled into Brodeur and another Penn defender at the free throw line for a turnover. The Quakers hit another 3-pointer on the next possession when Brodeur set a screen for fellow senior Ryan Betley (who made five 3-pointers on the afternoon).

That made it 64-52 Penn with 6:24 to play and it was goodnight, Providence.

Penn’s senior stabilized his team in a way that Providence’s have not in losses to Northwestern and now Penn.

Penn shot 52% from the field for the game and 11-22 from 3, while PC made 41% of its shots and missed half of its 20 free throw attempts.

Providence played with a sense of urgency only after they trailed by nearly 20 points, shocking for a veteran team that had recently come out flat against Northwestern.

Much like the Northwestern game, Providence lost its composure when trying to race back from a huge deficit. In both losses the Friars struggled to convert in the paint and seemed to speed themselves up when racing back after being down big.

Maliek White was a bright spot, scoring 13 of his career high 20 points in the first half. The other was the return of freshman Greg Gantt, who lost his mother last weekend. Gantt made noise on the defensive end, with a big time swat at the rim and a steal and dunk when Providence made its push in the second half.

This was an afternoon dominated by Penn, however. The Quakers, who were coming off of an 86-75 loss to Lafayette, led for 37 minutes and pretty much controlled this one throughout.

    Cooley can make all the excuses He wants, the fact is this team is soft. There is a definite pattern with His teams, five straight opening losses in the NCAA and opening loss last year in NIT. Through the first six games this year They have come out not ready to play the first half. Maybe PC should have let Him go toMichigan.

    Something seriously wrong with a team that starts slow and has to muster frantic comebacks, especially against what are supposed to be inferior opponents. No game plan when this happens. Embarrassing home loss.

    Still no floor leadership. Pipkins to me,is over rated. He looks to shoot 1st. Reeves was open baseline but only had 4 shots. Duke scored 2 points. Cooley has got to be able to coach and identify players role role. All about role. Pipkins is definitely not getting the message.
