Providence in Earl Timberlake’s Final 7
- Updated: July 30, 2019
Providence has been in heavy pursuit of Maryland wing Earl Timberlake for a long time — and for good reason — the DeMatha Catholic lefty is ranked 28th nationally in 247 Sports composite top 100.
The class of 2020 prospect cut his list to seven yesterday and the Friars are among those that made the cut, along with North Carolina, Miami, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, South Carolina, and Alabama. His announcement comes on the heels of a pair of four star 2020 prospects (Hunter Dickinson and Niels Lane) including PC in their lists of seven over the weekend. Dickinson and Timberlake are teammates at DeMatha.

Providence was the first of these schools to offer Timberlake a scholarship, doing so in October 2017. They have apparently gone all in since then. Providence is one of two schools that Timberlake has officially visited (along with South Carolina). He was on hand during last season’s opener against Siena — the night in which then-Friar freshman AJ Reeves went off for 29 points in his PC debut. Timberlake has stated publicly that he has stayed in contact with Reeves and David Duke since then.
Ed Cooley and his staff have been in consistent contact since the November opener. The staff took in one of his games when Providence was in DC to play Georgetown in January, held an in-home visit with him in April, saw him again at his school in May, and then tracked Timberlake throughout the spring and summer on the AAU circuit.

Timberlake helped his stock this summer, going from a top 50-75 type recruit to a top 30 player nationally. He’s a physical wing at 6’6, 215 pounds. Much like Reeves two years ago, Timberlake’s stock really took off at the NBPA Top 100 Camp earlier this summer. Reeves shot the lights out at that camp and committed to Providence shortly after. Timberlake’s recruitment figures to drag on a while longer, and the competition will be fierce.
Louisville was figured by many to be a real contender in Timberlake’s recruitment, but they did not make the final cut. Nor did Ohio State, who came to see him in Maryland on three occasions.
