Providence to Host Arkansas in NIT

Providence will host Arkansas in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night (9pm, ESPN2). This is a Razorback team led by a pair of relatively young players in 6’11 sophomore Daniel Gafford and freshman shooter Isaiah Joe.

Slowing Gafford, who averages over 16 points and eight rebounds, will be key for Providence. The sophomore is certainly talented, as evidenced by his 29 point, 16 rebound effort against Alabama on March 9, and other big games, including 23/13 vs. Texas A&M, 26/8 vs. Missouri, 28/9 against Vanderbilt, 27/12 vs. Indiana, and two huge games against a very good LSU team (32/7 and 23/8).

Here is a recent feature on Gafford from NBA.com. Gafford, who shot 66% from the field this year, was regarded as a first round pick last spring before deciding to return to school. No one has made more field goals in the SEC this season.

Joe is a freshman who broke Arkansas’ 3-point mark in a season, having made 108 to this point.

The Razorbacks won three games in a row to close out the regular season before falling to Florida in the opening round of the SEC Tournament. They finished 17-15 overall and 8-10 in the SEC this year.

    Nope, I don’t think the key for the Friars will be slowing down a guy; it’ll be shooting well. That’s been the bugaboo more than anything else for this team. I think the bigger danger than a particular opponent dude shooting well will facing a long court pressure defense (if what the wise guys are saying is true) and resulting turnovers.

    On balance, the Friars should feel very good about this, given improved play down the stretch, an SEC opponent, and home cooking.
