Marquette, Hausers Too Much for Providence

As Marquette pulled away from Providence in yesterday’s 76-58 victory, junior Sam Hauser let out a big smile after one of his four 3-pointers swished through the net. Seemingly seconds later, the Golden Eagles bench erupted after Markus Howard pulled up from 23 feet to bury a deep one.

Hauser, Howard and their teammates were having the fun that has so often eluded Friartown at home this season. Winning is fun, and at 23-4 overall and 12-2 in the Big East, Marquette is certainly enjoying its perch atop the Big East.

The 15-13 Friars have suffered through more growing pains than most expected in 2019.

Saturday continued the season-long issues that have plagued PC. A lack of consistency (point guard and bench play were the culprits Saturday), and offensive droughts that take the home crowd out of the game, all but giving Providence no chance to defeat a team as efficient as Marquette.

Providence shot just 27% in the first half and fell into an 11 point hole at the break (31-20). Marquette closed the half on a 29-13 run.

The Friars simply lack the offensive punch and composure to dig their way out of such a hole. Even on a day in which Howard, the likely Big East Player of the Year, shot just 2-12, Hauser finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, his younger brother, Joey, shot 6-8 from the field and 3-4 from deep, while Sacar Anim was the real Friar killer. Anim made 8-12 shots, and scored 18 points of his own.

Marquette put on an offensive clinic in the second half, making 8-12 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

The second half also provided the bright spots of the afternoon for Providence. Freshman AJ Reeves looked like the scorer we saw prior to the foot injury that sidelined him for six weeks. Reeves scored PC’s first seven points out of the locker room and 10 total in the second half. Fellow frosh David Duke grabbed six second half rebounds and made three field goals over the final 20 minutes. While Howard was slowed by a hip injury, Duke’s length played a factor in bothering him as well.

While Marquette is scary when hitting from deep as they did yesterday, the key to their run this season has been an improved defense. Sophomore big man Theo John is a physical presence inside, and he’s backed up by Nebraska transfer Ed Morrow who brings Chicago toughness to the interior. That duo, and swarming double teams, were key in slowing Nate Watson (10 points).

Watson (10), Reeves (13), and Alpha Dialo (19 on 6-14 shooting) were the only Friars to score in double figures.

The loss was Providence’s fifth at home in Big East play this year.

    Marquette definitely the better team. They will make some noise in the NCAA’s for sure. They’ll go a long way. Same old, same old for the Friars. Duke looked so much better at the 2.     Tough to watch. We so rarely get clean looks from beyond the 3 point line and we miss them when we do. Watson will be first team BE next season and Duke/Reeves should be enough to get them dancing next year. A shame to waste Diallo’s senior season. He’s a class act. The offense just looks so stagnant as they continuously force shots as the shot clock winds down. I hope MAL improves his shot, because they need a true PG next season. We’ve been so spoiled at this position (Cotton, Dunn, Cartwright) and so far MAL has been subpar.
