Friars a 10 Seed, Headed to Charlotte

KC in NCAAT

Providence is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth year in a row.

After a thrilling week in New York that produced Big East Tournament wins over Creighton and #3 Xavier before the Friars eventually fell to #2 Villanova in overtime, PC will travel to Charlotte for a Friday afternoon tilt with Texas A&M (12:15pm tip).

Providence is the 10 seed and A&M is seventh in the West Region.

Second seeded North Carolina, who ended PC’s season in both 2014 and 2016, very likely awaits the winner in the second round.

Ed Cooley will be tasked with finding a way to counter the Aggies’ size. Sophomore Robert Williams is a 6’10 potential lottery pick who was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year following a season in which he averaged over 10 points, nine rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.

He’s paired inside with All SEC 1st Team center Tyler Davis, a back-to-the-basket big man standing 6’11, 260 pounds.

2017-18 was a wild ride for A&M. They started the season 7-0 by throttling West Virginia in their season opener (88-65), and then knocking off tournament hopefuls in Oklahoma State (72-55), Penn State (98-87), and then #10 USC on the road (75-69).

Prior to the start of SEC play, the Aggies were ranked fifth in the country. They lost four players to either injury or suspension early in conference play and started 0-5 in the league. They rebounded in time to finish 9-9 in the SEC and 20-12 overall, with a win over then #8 Auburn.

They aren’t a great shooting team (.328 from 3, .667 from the free throw line), but rank in the top 15 nationally in field goal percentage defense. The Aggies were a Sweet 16 team in 2016.
