Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball (and other topics) while waiting to see if PC will have two first round draft picks in the same year for the first time in their history.

  • Best of luck to Ben Bentil as he awaits the upcoming NBA Draft. If he winds up going in the first round he will have made a wise decision. However, I have always been of the opinion that if a player gets drafted in the second round he made a mistake coming out early. The worst thing that typically can happen if the player returns to college is that he winds up in the second round again. But there is also a chance he can improve his skill set and become a first round draft choice. In Bentil’s case he could have used this season to work on his passing and ball handling skills and also improve his outside shot.
  • If I had to guess at this point, I am going to say that Bentil goes in the first round somewhere in the mid-twenties. A wise decision on his part, but it is going to be close.
  • It looks like the old Yankee Conference will be invading the Dunk this year as the Friars will be hosting Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, UMass, and URI. Only one team is missing and we all know which one that is.
  • I am looking for Kris Dunn to be picked no later than fifth by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the upcoming Draft. There are several teams, including the New Orleans Pelicans, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Chicago Bulls, and the Sacramento Kings that may want to trade up to the third or fourth pick in order to get Dunn ahead of the Timberwolves.
  • What is the difference between the third pick and the fifth pick in the NBA Draft? Approximately one million dollars per year over three years. That will make Dunn one of the most nervous people in attendance at the Barclay Center on draft night.
  • This year will be the second straight season that there will not be a senior scholarship player on PC’s roster. One of the by products of all the transferring in college basketball today.
  • At the recent NBA combine Bentil surprisingly had the largest hands measuring in at 9.25 inches.  Very large but compare that to a guy like Dr. J. whose hands measured an 12. 5 inches. Check this out:

  • As hard as it is to believe, the Erving did not have the biggest hands in NBA history. That honor may go to the one and only Connie Hawkins:

  • As far as the Friar with the biggest hands of all time I would have to go with Otis Thorpe. When he shakes your hand you know you have had your hand shook:

  • East Providence native Terrell Brown, a 6’10 center who played last season at St. Andrew’s, will be reclassifying to the 2017 class and be doing a post grad year at the Tilton School. Brown is having a breakout season this spring on the AAU circuit averaging 11 points and six rebounds per game for BABC in the Nike EYBL League. High major programs should definitely be taking a second look at Brown.
  • You would think a player of Paschal Chukwu’s stature (7’2 with a 7’8 wingspan) would come along once in a lifetime for an AAU program. Think again. Meet Chol Marial a 7’3 freshman center on the Connectict Basketball Club who has an amazing 7’11 wingspan. What is even more amazing is that he might just be the best player in the class of 2019. Friar fans will be able to see him play the next few years on the NEPSAC circuit for Cheshire Academy:

  • Classical High School’s David Duke has become the latest New England High School star to join the prep school ranks, and will be playing next year at Cushing Academy in the NEPSAC AA League. He has also recently picked up an offer from Providence.
