Jalen Lindsey Providing a Lift

Lindsey low five cartwright

Looking for a spark after his Friars were handled at Seton Hall, Ed Cooley reinserted Jalen Lindsey into the starting lineup against DePaul and has been rewarded.

In wins over DePaul and Creighton, Lindsey has scored 27 points on 8-17 shooting and made a concerted effort to become more of a presence on the interior.

In Lindsey’s six games prior to the victory over DePaul he had taken just two foul shots. In fact, he’d played ten Big East games this season in which he didn’t attempt a single free throw.

Lindsey has taken 10 over the past two games, and connected on nine of those.

Against Creighton we saw both a reminder of his struggles from deep, but also why the sophomore from Tennessee could be an X-factor in March.

Lindsey was 5-10 from the floor on Wednesday night, missing all five of his 3 point attempts, but he is finding other ways to score.

He connected on all five of his shots from inside the arc, and made timely plays in doing so.

In the first half Lindsey scored twice while cutting to the basket and his third hoop came off of an offensive rebound.

PC trailed by as many as eight with 15 minutes to play, but quickly cut into that lead with Lindsey providing the big play — a half hook inside in which he was fouled to bring the Friars to within one.

Then, with under six minutes to play, Lindsey was fouled cutting to the basket and made both free throws to push PC ahead by a point.

For a player who hadn’t scored in double figures in Big East play prior to last weekend, Lindsey’s 13 against DePaul and 14 versus Creighton were not just a step forward for him, but a badly needed lift for a Friar team that was reeling.

Last night, fellow starters Rodney Bullock (3 points, 1-7 shooting) and Junior Lomomba (2 points, 1-2 shooting) combined for just five points, and the bench gave Cooley just one made field goal.

Against DePaul, Lindsey and fellow sophomore Kyron Cartwright combined for 30 points with Kris Dunn limited to 17 minutes due to illness.

Regardless of whether his 3 point shot is dropping (and it largely has not for much of this season) the Friars need something out of Lindsey if they have any hopes of making noise in March.

The past five days have been a step forward.
