Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball (and other topics) while waiting for the start of what should be an incredible Big East basketball season.

  • I hope everyone had a great Christmas. It is a great time of the year and a great time to be a Friar fan!
  • Ben Bentil was named Big East Player of the Week today after his 32 point performance against UMass. It surely will not be his last Big East Player of the Week award and he should be well on his way to making First Team All Big East at the end of the year.
  • The latest national college basketball polls are out and PC is currently ranked 12th in the AP Writers’ Poll and 13th in the USA Coaches’ Poll. While it would have been awesome to have a matchup of Top 10 teams when the Friars open their Big East season on Thursday against Butler, it is still probably the most significant Big East opener that the Friars have played in years.
  • Friarbasketball.com’s Kevin Farrahar has produced some great highlight videos this year and his latest contains the Top Ten Non-Conference Plays (plus one) for the Friars:

  • The next Ed Cooley Radio Show takes place tonight at Davinci’s on Federal Hill. It can be heard live on WEEI 103.7 FM.
  • Myron Metcalf of ESPN says that having a ticket a PC game this year is having a ticket to The Kris Dunn Experience. You have to like the sound of that.
  • Speaking of Friar tickets, I took a look at the availability on line and it seems they are going fast. You better get yours while you can as you don’t want to be shut out this year.
  • Paschal, what on Earth were you ever thinking?
  • The Big East has some great teams this year but one team that worries mme as much as any other is Marquette. Winners of nine straight and with a front court that features Henry Ellenson and Luke Fischer, the Golden Eagles will be a very intriguing matchup for the Friars.
  • Friarbasketball.com’s Facebook page now has over 10,000 likes. Thanks to everyone who spent the time to like us on Facebook!
  • Here it is after Christmas and the PC basketball team has only one defeat (to the number one team in the country) and the PC hockey team is undefeated. It almost seems like science fiction, but I will take it!
  • The loss of Ryan Fazekas for an extended period has certainly hurt the Friars but the silver lining is that it has given Jalen Lindsey extra minutes on the court to get his game untracked.
