News, notes, and opinions on Providence College basketball while wondering whatever happened to Jerome “Send it in Jerome” Lane.
- Paschal, what on Earth were you ever thinking?
- Ditto for all those fifth year senior big men who decided that it would not be a good idea to play with Kris Dunn this year.
- Kris Dunn vs. Denzel Valentine. It does not get any better than that for college basketball in November. Whoever has the better game may wind up being the early leader for National Player of the Year.
- Which front court would you rather have right now? Ben Bentil, Rodney Bullock, and Ryan Fazekas or LaDontae Henton, Carson Desrosiers, and Tyler Harris? The latter may be more experienced but the former is more athletic and will have a couple of more years to grow together.
- Speaking of LaDontae Henton, it must be killing him not to be able to play in this game today against his hometown team. One year too late.
- The victory on Thursday night against Evansville was much more than just an ordinary win. It is a huge boost to the Friars’ RPI. If they had lost they would have had games against Santa Clara and Boise State or Boston College instead of having a victory against 11th ranked Arizona and a game against third ranked Michigan State.
- Tonight’s game against Michigan State will be the second straight game where the Friars have a chance to avenge an NCAA tournament loss. After getting revenge for the 1997 Elite Eight loss to the Arizona Wildcats PC gets a chance to avenge the 1978 tournament loss to Magic Johnson’s Michigan State team. I am sure that Billy Eason will be watching the game very closely.
- The Friars also got some personal revenge against Arizona head coach Sean Miller as he was the Pittsburgh point guard who assisted on the infamous “send it in Jerome” dunk which shattered the backboard against the Friars.
- Speaking of tonight’s game here are some previews of the matchup between the Friars and the Spartans:
- One of the objectives during the non conference schedule is to get a signature win against an opponent that will get the attention of the NCAA tournament committee in March. Mission accomplished. Sure Arizona may not be a Top 10 team but at the end of the year they will wind up being a Top 25 team.
- Former Friar recruit Kaleb Joseph has not scored a point in his last five games for Syracuse. Sometimes going to your dream school can turn into a nightmare.
