Maliek White Commits to Providence
- Updated: September 28, 2015
The first shoe has dropped in Providence’s 2016 recruiting class and it’s point guard Maliek White of Richmond, VA. The news was first broken by Kevin McNamara of The Providence Journal.
White recently cut his list to four schools (Providence, Pitt, Georgia Tech and Old Dominion) and decided to pledge to PC after visiting this weekend. He was a relative unknown on the recruiting trail, but played well throughout the spring and summer and began to see high major offers come in.
Friarbasketball.com’s Craig Leighton took a Closer Look at White on Aug. 21. From that article:
Scout writes “No one knows yet where Maliek White will end up, but whichever school signs him is likely to bring in a player who surprises its own fan base. The Virginia point guard has been widely overlooked nationally and has the strength and confidence to contribute as a freshman, and ultimately he projects as a multi-year starter at the college level.”
Rivals notes “White is one of those guys that is a little bit off the radar but lives for the challenge. He can shoot it a bit from deep, attacks off the dribble, is a sneaky athlete and is 100 percent competitor on the floor.”
Here is some reaction from across the web on White’s commitment:

Providence gets a tough one in Maliek White. Can play one or slide over to the two. No nonsense guy. Approach reminds me of Marcus Denmon. — Eric Bossi (@ebosshoops) September 28, 2015
Like the get for Providence in ’16 PG Maliek White. Athletic & explosive guard that proved he was High Major prospect this past summer. — Pat Lawless (@GiveNGobball) September 28, 2015

Excellent! Very athletic, aggressive and confident.
His specific point gaurd skills as well as his defensive footwork needs a great deal of work, but his potential is very high, especially defensively…Sham just stuck coaching gold….

If, IF he can become all that you say. Many are highly touted. Few live up to it!

I like him… very good sign by Cooley, I think …(there is never any promises for anything…how did you read a guarantee in the word ‘potential’?)
