Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball while waiting for the start of the July Live Period for recruiting.

  • After visiting several schools it looks like Paschal Chukwu is going to wind up at Syracuse University. Everything about this transfer has been bizarre, including the final destination choice of Syracuse. The Orangemen were not among the early schools listed for Chukwu yet he winds up committing there while on a visit just a couple of days after he said he was considering them.
  • It is probably not the worst landing spot for Chukwu considering that he might thrive in the middle of their vaunted zone defense, but you have to wonder what the benefit is to sitting out a year when you could be getting major minutes on the court at PC while playing with the best point guard in the country.
  • Chukwu’s high school coach Leo Redgate did himself no favors in a recent interviewwith The Daily Orange in which he blamed the Friar coaching staff for not playing Chukwu enough and for not getting him the ball when they did play him. Not only was he wrong but he put both himself and Chukwu in a bad light.
  • The new NCAA rule change that allows college players to declare for the draft and be evaluated at the Draft Combine without losing their college eligibility is a huge step in the right direction in enabling college players to make a much more informed decision on whether they want to turn pro or stay in college. If a player gets negative feedback from the combine, or does not get selected for the combine he can pull his name out of the draft and return to college. Hopefully this will lead to a decrease in the amount of players who declare early for the draft but go undrafted.
  • Congratulations to Carson Desrosiers for signing a professional contract to play for Katakana Basket Club in Finland. Carson has the type of game that could thrive in Europe and hopefully he will have a long and productive career there.
  • It seems that the Friar basketball program has lost it’s recruiting momentum. I have every faith that Ed Cooley and the staff will get it back but PC could really use a big win on the recruiting trail very soon.
  • Kris Dunn really turned some heads last weekend at the Nike Basketball Academy. Don’t be surprised if he winds up getting strong consideration for pre-season national player of the year on many sites. You can also expect his name to appear on most first team  pre-season All American lists. This is going to be a huge year for Dunn.
  • I like that Ed Cooley has a desire to participate in the USA basketball national programs but this is the one year I wish that he had stayed home. Who knew that we would still be searching for 2015 players this late in the game?

Please let me know if you like these Here and There articles. Many times there are several different topics out there but none of them need to have an article on their own. I think Here and There articles fill that void.

Congratulations to Carson! Any chance his sister can sing the national anthem again at a game this year?? There’s a lot of talent in that family
