Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball (and other topics) while waiting to see if the coaching staff adds one more player to the 2015 recruiting class.

  • This is supposed to be the quiet period for college basketball but it is turning out to be anything but quiet for Ed Cooley.  He is currently in Greece with the USA Under 19 team while at the same time trying to complete his recruiting for the class of 2015. He’s also set to lay the groundwork for 2016 and 2017 recruiting during the all important July Live Period. The Friar head coach is being stretched thin.
  • Word is that North Carolina State transfer Kyle Washington  is planning on visiting Providence this Thursday and Friday despite the fact Cooley will be away overseas. I am going to take this as a good sign that Washington is serious about the Friars. He is exactly the type of power forward that PC needs in the program right now. Hopefully he is already sold on Cooley and just wants to check out the campus and facilities before making a decision.
  • If you missed it the other day you really should check out the podcast that was done by In the Clutch Radio with God Shammgod. It is over an hour long and well worth your time as Shammgod goes through his entire basketball career from childhood right up until today.
  • Looking at the roster next year there is currently only one scholarship player on it from New England (Kris Dunn). For sustained long term success PC is going to have to get its fair share of players out of New England. The NEPSAC Prep School Conference annually contain some of the best players in the country. New England kids are the ones who go to PC home games during the season. They are the ones who go to PC’s Late Night Madness and they are the ones who go to the PC Elite Camp. With these advantages it is imperative that the coaching staff gets some of these players to go to PC.
  • Getting Preston Murphy on board as an assistant coach at Creighton is a big win for the Bluejays. He will be able to land some top players from the East (and the Michigan area) to solidify the Creighton program.
  • After looking at the latest Draft Express 2015 Mock Draft it becomes painfully obvious how tough it is to make it in the NBA.  Players ranked in the 25th – 50th range include Chris McCullough, Cliff Alexander, Rakeem Christmas, Aaron Harrison, and Dakari Johnson. Coming out of high school many of these guys were considered potential lottery picks. The NBA is definitely the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but if you are a basketball player you better make sure you have other options.
  • Another item of note on the latest Draft Express Mock Draft is that they do not have any Big East players being selected in the two rounds of the draft. It’s nice to get your fair share of top 100 players but in order to really be considered a high major conference the Big East is going to have to start bringing in some top 25 talent.
  • It looks like Oregon senior guard (and former Providence commit) Joseph Young is going to be selected somewhere in the second round of the draft. After all that moving around he was able to salvage his career after all. I don’t know if he has the height to make it in the NBA but at least it looks like he is going to get his shot.
  • Speaking of getting their shot LaDontae Henton has had several workouts with NBA teams over the past couple of weeks. Hopefully one of these teams likes what they see and they sign him to their summer league team so he really does get his shot.
