Friarbasketball.com takes a closer look at a number of key Friar recruiting targets. Our staff will continue to write reports on the top Friar recruits throughout the year, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: John Carlos Reyes

Position: Center

High School: Sound Doctrine (GA)

AAU Program: Game Elite

Overview:

The transfer of center Paschal Chukwu in late May has left the Friars painfully short in the frontcourt for next year. One of the keys to how successful next year’s team will be is for the Friars to add at least one big man for added frontcourt depth. John Carlos Reyes, a class of 2015 6’10 center from Sound Doctrine (GA) is one of the players that the Friars are taking a look at.

Reyes played last year for Sound Doctrine after deciding that he needed an additional year of prep school in order to be recruited at the high major level. His strategy has worked as programs such as Tennessee, Penn State and Providence are now chasing after him after he recently became fully qualified when he recently achieved a qualifying score on the ACT test.

Reyes is already a high major player on the defensive end. He has great timing when blocking shots and moves very well for a big man. Offensively he is limited at this point, but he does have a decent touch around the rim, good footwork, and a developing hook shot.  He has the potential to be an effective offensive player at the next level with further development.  He will also need to add more weight to be effective in the low post. Here is an older highlight video of Reyes which shows his ability at blocking shots:

What Others Are Saying:

Future 150 calls Reyes “A true big man. He possesses soft hands and shows good footwork on the inside. Also has a soft touch around the rim.”

Both ESPN and Scout have Reyes ranked as a three star player.

The Competition:

Reyes has already recently taken an official visit to Penn State. Other schools showing recent interest in him include Tennessee, Memphis, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, South Florida, and Clemson.

The Bottom Line:

John Carlos Reyes would be a nice addition to next year’s team. He would be able to provide frontcourt depth off the bench next year and has the long term potential to be an effective four year player at a high major school. Reyes is a Jeff Battle recruit and is going to be at PC this week for an official visit.

They don’t make them like Ruben anymore, but I’ll take anything close to him. Seems like this kid could really develop into a fine player in the Big East. Fingers crossed here, need a rim protector.
