A Closer Look: Bruce Brown

Bruce-Brown

Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key Friar targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Bruce Brown

Position: SG

School: Vermont Academy

AAU Program: BABC

Class: 2016

Overview:

Bruce Brown may very well be the best player in New England in the class of 2016. He currently plays for Alex Popp at Vermont Academy in the NEPSAC Prep School League where he goes up against some of best players in the country on a regular basis.

Brown is an elite level athlete who is devastating when he takes the ball to the rim. At 6’4 with a very strong frame most guards have a great deal of trouble trying to guard him. Brown is a streaky outside shooter who is improving his perimeter game. He will need to continue working on this at the next level. Here is a highlight video of Brown in action courtesy of RI Affiliated:

Brown is having a great spring playing AAU ball averaging averaging 16.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for BABC on the EYBL circuit. BABC currently leads their division with a 13-4 record in EYBL play.

First Hand Impressions

Over the past couple of years I have seen Bruce Brown play numerous times. The first thing that strikes you with Brown is that it only takes a minute or two before you realize he is the best player on the court. His combination of size, strength, and quickness overpower any guard who tries to defend him. Any game that I have seen Brown play in he has typically been the dominant player on the court. With his talent he should be able to continue to do this at the next level if he keeps on progressing as expected.

What Others are Saying

ESPN says that “Brown is an attacking guard on both ends of the floor. He is long and cut with elite level quickness and the ability to start and stop on a dime. That translates into a high level driving game with both a quick first step and the ability to make reflex adjustments on his way to the rim with spins, jump-stops, and quick secondary moves off the bounce. Brown is also an elite on-the-ball defender because of his combination of both quickness and length. His offensive skill set is also consistently improving so that he is now capable of making open threes and pull-ups alike.” ESPN currently has Brown ranked 54th nationally in the class of 2016.

Scout says that “Brown loves to utilize his powerful frame to bully his way into the paint yet also can spot up on the perimeter and knock in jump shots. He’s just an average ballhander, however, an area for him to cultivate during the remainder of his prep career.” Scout currently has Brown ranked 51st in the 2016 class.

Rivals says that “Brown has tremendous strength for a guard. Combining that strength with his willingness to attack and play above the rim make him a lethal force against any competition. Brown fears no defender and welcomes all contact on his way to the rim.” He is currently ranked 54th nationally in the 2016 class by Rivals.

The Competition:

There are many high major programs chasing Brown including Texas, St. John’s, Indiana, Georgetown, SMU, Boston College, Miami, and Virginia Tech. Look for this list to grow as more schools offer him during the summer AAU period.

The Bottom Line:

Bruce Brown is one of the prize catches in the 2016 class. There has been some question as to how involved the Friars have been in his recruitment, but Brown made an unofficial visit to PC a few weeks ago.
