A Closer Look: Hamidou Diallo
- Updated: May 7, 2015
Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key PC recruiting targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and offer updates on prospects that have been previously featured.
Prospect: Hamidou Diallo
Position: PG-SG
School: Woodstock Academy
AAU Program: New York Jayhawks
Class: 2017
Overview:
6’4 shooting guard Hamidou Diallo from Woodstock Academy in Connecticut is one of the fastest rising players nationally in the class of 2017. Diallo is an incredible athlete with a tremendous upside. He has range out to the three point line and is able to drive to the basket at will. Diallo is already one the the top guard prospects in the country and his stock is still rising. Here is a highlight video showcasing Diallo’s athletic ability:
Diallo played for Putnam Science Academy last season against some of the top high school players in the country in the NEPSAC Prep School League. Putnam Science is closing down at the end of this school year, but Diallo and the entire Putnam Science program, under head coach Tom Espinosa, are moving to Woodstock Academy next year where they will continue to play in the NEPSAC.
The PC staff has been actively recruiting Diallo and his Putnam Science teammate, 2016 power forward Mamadou Diarra, for over a year. They have both been to several PC games and have both been on the PC campus numerous times. Look for the Friar staff to go even harder after both players going forward.
What Others are Saying
ESPN says that “Diallo is a long and very athletic attacking wing that care score in a variety of ways. He finishes above the rim on the break. Gets to the rim, hits rhythm dribble pull up jumpers and threes when his feet are set. He rebounds well for a perimeter player and can defend both wing positions. He competes and makes plays throughout the game as he attacks defenders relentlessly. He has and great motor and never stops playing.
NERR says that “Diallo made his first appearance in New England last May and has come on strong ever since, standing out at virtually every opportunity and scoring high level scholarship offers in the process, most recently from UConn.” NERR currently ranks Diallo as the no. 3 recruit in New England for the class of 2017.
Rivals says that “Diallo has all of the physical tools. He has long arms, he gets off the floor quickly and he has an outstanding first step. Long and lean, he can navigate through traffic and despite being skinny, he is able to take a bump and keep his balance and not lose his athleticism. Most impressively, though, is that Diallo looks to have the skill part of the game down as well. A summertime member of the NYC Jayhawks program, Diallo is a good ball-handler from the wing, shoots with easy range to the three-point line and he has a nicely developed mid-range game featuring pull-up jumpers and floaters.” Rivals currently has Diallo ranked 37th nationally in the class of 2017.
The Competition Besides the Friars, Diallo is being recruited by several schools including Iowa State, Minnesota, UConn, St. John’s, Louisville, and Ohio State. Look for many more high major programs to make offers as he continues to blow up during the spring and summer AAU seasons.
The Bottom Line Diallo is going to wind up being one of the top 25-50 players in the country before his high school career is finished. His athletic ability is off the charts. PC and Ed Cooley have been recruiting him for a long time and should continue to go after him hard. Look for the Friars to concentrate on Diallo even more and be involved in his recruitment up to the end. Diallo could succeed Kris Dunn in helping to take the Friars to the next level.
