Friar Basketball

A Closer Look: Kimani Lawrence

Lawrence-600x369

Friarbasketball.com will be taking a closer look at a number of key PC recruiting targets. Our staff will continue to provide reports on the top Friar targets throughout the year, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Kimani Lawrence

Position: SF

School: Cushing Academy

AAU Program: Expressions Elite

Class: 2017

Overview:

Kimani Lawrence is a 6’6 small forward in the class of 2017 who is just starting to scratch the surface of his ability.  The Providence, RI native is currently at Cushing Academy playing against some of the toughest competition in the country in the NEPSAC AA League.

Lawrence is a very athletic small forward who uses his speed and quickness to take the ball to the basket very effectively. Although still a streaky shooter at this point, Kimani does have a nice outside touch and has range out to the three point line. Here is a highlight video of Lawrence displaying all of his offensive arsenal:

First Hand Impressions:

I have seen Lawrence play several times in person and slowly but surely his game is improving. He shows all the tools but sometimes has trouble putting it all together on a consistent basis. This is to be expected from a high school sophomore. He has a tendency to just drift in games that he could dominate but this should should be corrected with more maturity. He still needs to work on his strength and explosive ability but he has plenty of time to improve these aspects of his game. Lawrence has the tools to wind up being a shooting guard at the next level.

What Others are Saying:

24/7 Sports said during the National Prep Invitational that “Lawrence played aggressively against the much older Blair Academy squad, which featured players committed to Notre Dame, Villanova, and Cornell. Lawrence slashed to the basket in the half-court and scored in transition. He showed more patience, picking his spots on offense. Although he’s not very strong, Lawrence competed for rebounds and tried to use his length to have an effect on the passing lanes. The sophomore has already received offers from Providence, Rhode Island, and St. Bonaventure, while Syracuse has expressed interest”. 24/7 currently ranks him 66th in the country for the 2017 class.

The New England Recruiting Report says that “Sophomore swing-man Kimani Lawrence possesses real-deal talent and there aren’t many prospects more enticing when he has his all-around-game clicking on all cylinders. Lawrence has been a feature-player for a 10-4 Cushing Academy Squad. Lawrence is currently the #8 Ranked Sophomore in New England.”

The Competition:

Besides the Friars Lawrence is hearing from Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, and Syracuse. Look for a host of high major programs to jump on board during this year’s Spring and Summer AAU season.

The Bottom Line

Kimani Lawrence’s best basketball is still in front of him. He has all the tools and just needs to put it together on a more consistent basis. The PC coaching staff has been in on Lawrence from the beginning and Kimani recently said that the Friars are recruiting him the hardest. This is to the Friars advantage as I expect Lawrence to pick up numerous high major offers as the summer progresses. PC will be in it to the end with Kimani.
