Bob Simon Leaving for Alabama

Bob Simon

Providence Associate Head Coach Bob Simon is taking an assistant coach position with Alabama according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

Simon joined Providence’s staff when Ed Cooley was hired four years ago and has been an assistant for Cooley for nine years in total. He will be working for former NBA head coach Avery Johnson who recently took over the Alabama program. Simon is well known as both a terrific recruiter and a solid X’s and O’s coach.

The Providence Journal’s Kevin McNamara was able to confirm the departure of Simon with head coach Ed Cooley who said, “I am happy for him, he ground out a lot of recruiting battles.”

Early speculation from Goodman is that Cooley could replace Simon with former Wake Forest assistant Jeff Battle. Battle was offered a position on Ed Cooley’s staff when Cooley was hired at PC, but he decided to remain at Wake Forest as his son was completing high school. Another candidate could be PC’s Director of Player Operations Mike Jackson who was formerly an assistant coach at Michigan and Purdue. Providence has also been rumored to be looking for a permanent spot on the coaching staff for God Shammgod.

Friarbasketball.com will have more information on this and the search for a new assistant coach as information becomes available.

Not a nice thing to say…Bob. …or Tom . I can never knock someone who wants to move on to other opportunities…none of us know his reason for leaving. ..and leaving a program you love and a coach you have been with a long time is never an easy decision. ..I wish him the best
