Damion Lee One to Watch

Damion Lee

Drexel’s Damion Lee told ESPN today that he plans on transferring for his fifth season of eligibility. He’ll be eligible to play immediately in the 2015-16 season.

Lee is a prospect that Friarbasketball.com has been tracking since the fall of 2010. That November Lee debuted for St. Thomas More and my first look at him was at the National Prep Showcase that month.

The Baltimore native had graduated that spring, but decided to de-commit from Towson after a four year career at Calvert Hall — the same high school as 2015 Providence signee Drew Edwards — and spent a prep season in Connecticut watching his stock explode.

It all started at the Showcase, as Lee and teammate Andre Drummond rolled past Lee Academy in their first game. Lee made 7-9 shots from the field and suddenly a recruit that few had heard of prior to the Showcase was receiving interest from the likes of Providence (under former head coach Keno Davis).

Despite the high-major interest, the 6’6 Lee decided to head to Drexel, where he was named CAA Rookie of the Year and soon became one of the best guards in the country. The versatile Lee aggressively takes the ball to the rim, but is equally capable of beating teams from the outside. Before fracturing his hand at the end of this season Lee was averaging over 21 points per game while making 88% of his free throws and 38% from 3.

The Providence Journal’s Kevin McNamara tweeted today that he expects the Friars to have interest.

Here’s an overview of Damion Lee:

1. Lee missed the entire 2013-14 season with a torn ACL, but rebounded well this past season to average over 21 points per game. He knocked down 8-11 from 3-point range against USC (32 points that night) and twice scored 30+ against an NCAA Tournament team in Northeastern.

2. While a good shooter from deep, Lee is aggressive in getting to the free throw line. He shot nine or more free throws in 10 games this season.

3. While at St. Thomas More he was named 1st Team NEPSAC AAA. Drummond, Jakaar Sampson and Naadir Tharpe were fellow 1st Team members. There he also teamed with Adam Jones, a power forward who committed to Ed Cooley at Fairfield, so Cooley and Lee have crossed paths more than once.

4. St. Thomas More won the Prep National Championship in 2011, defeating Notre Dame Prep in the finals. Lee scored 25 points in the championship game. ND Prep featured Ricky Ledo, Myles Davis (Xavier), Todd Mayo (Marquette) and Khem Birch (Pitt/UNLV) at the time. STM was thought to be Drummond and a team of mid-major talents, but Lee was outstanding the entire season and was named their team MVP.

5. Prior to injuring his knee last season Lee scored 22 points against UCLA.
