Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and quotes on PC basketball while waiting for 9:57 pm tonight. Go Friars!!

  • The Big East going 4-0 yesterday on the opening day of the NCAA tournament was a huge deal for the conference. It is amazing how little respect there still is out there for the Big East even after they got six teams in the tournament and had the second ranked conference RPI.
  • One of the great strengths of Ed Cooley is that he seems to get his teams to peak at the right time. During the Big East Tournament the Friars were playing as well as they have all season. Ben Bentil is becoming a force, Tyler Harris has had some good games, and Jalen Lindsey has found some more confidence in his outside shot. They just need to carry it forward.
  • I am looking for Tyler Harris to have a big game tonight. With Dayton’s lack of size I think he can do some real damage close to the hoop, particular when their bigs will be preoccupied with our other bigs.
  • Former Friar commit Markus Crider had a really nice game yesterday as his Georgia State team defeated Baylor in a huge upset. It couldn’t happen to a nicer kid.
  • Speaking of former Friar commits, Ian Baker and his New Mexico State teammates are playing Kansas today.
  • I don’t know what Jim Boeheim was thinking with that press conference yesterday. Sometimes it is just better to not say anything.
  • I only had Iowa State going to the Elite 8 so I guess my bracket is still on life support. I did have Georgia State over Baylor though.
  • I can understand Dayton getting to play the play-in game in Dayton. I can understand Dayton being put in the bracket that plays in Columbus. What I can’t understand is allowing them to do both. It is just not fair and would have been an easy fix for the tournament committee.
  • If PC plays the way they are capable of playing Dayton can’t beat them. If they play a subpar game all bets are off.
  • It is the beginning of transfer season and already some former Friar recruits are possibly on the move. The funny thing is they may not be as desirable now as they were then as the needs of the team are always changing. Time will tell.
  • It is also the beginning of the coaching carousel as several head coaching jobs have already opened up. I am expecting at least one PC assistant to get the call and move on to a head coaching gig. We have been fortunate to keep this staff intact for four years as it is.
  • One of the things that I love about watching the NCAA tournament is watching all the former NEPSAC players that I saw play in person. It seems that there is at least one former NEPSAC player in just about every game. Unfortunately Georges Niang left the tournament early but I am still confident there will be multiple NEPSAC players in the Final Four.
  • Memo to the NCAA, please don’t ever schedule the Friars to play in the last game of the first round ever again. It is not good for my health and the waiting is killing me.
  • I would love to compare what some of these mock drafts had at the beginning of the season to what they have now. Kris Dunn was nowhere to be seen. Now it seems like they are trying to sneak him up their lists a little at a time so it doesn’t look like they totally missed on him.
  • Don’t let all these sports writers fool you, saying that the whole Friar team is just Dunn and Henton. Last year at this time they were saying the whole team was Cotton and the immediate future was not very bright. Oops.
  • Speaking of the future, Ben Bentil is going to be a star in the Big East, maybe as early as next year. And yes, the future is very bright.
  • That’s it from me. Enjoy the game tonight. Friarbasketball.com’s Kevin Farrahar will be on hand on Columbus to provide first hand reports of all the action.
