Providence Demolishes DePaul

Dunn feb

Kris Dunn and Providence are simply too much for DePaul.

Three weeks after Dunn’s 27 point, 13 rebound, 11 assist explosion in PC’s 83-72 victory over the Blue Demons in late-January, the Friars were even more dominant in Chicago. On this night PC did it behind their defense.

The Friars ripped off a 20-3 run in the opening minutes and never looked back, holding DePaul to just 29% shooting in the first half and coming up with nine steals in the game’s first 20 minutes to take a 41-26 lead into the break.

Providence blew the game open in the second half, leading by as many as 31 points en route to a convincing 84-57 road win.

The catalysts for PC were once again Dunn and LaDontae Henton, with the Friars’ point guard making 11-12 from the free throw line and 5-7 from the field (21 points), while Henton finished with a 22 point, 11 rebound double double. Dunn’s biggest impact came on the defensive end, where he hounded DePaul’s ball handlers and owned the passing lanes throughout. He had four steals on the night.

Freshman Ben Bentil had his second double double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Providence made over 52% of their shots from the field and lived at the free throw line, connecting on 27-33 at the stripe.

This was a significant victory for the Friars who now have 19 wins on the season with four games remaining on the schedule. The road win vaults PC to #21 in the RPI and inches them ever closer to a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. A split in their final four games should assure the Friars of a top 25 RPI rating at season’s end and a very good seed in the tournament.

Providence (now 19-8, 9-5) returns to action on Feb. 24 when they visit #6 Villanova.

Great effort, passion and defense. The zone is getting so good. Speed,
Length and pressure. Come March it will serve the friars well. You can’t ALWAYS shoot well. But defense and rebounding
    Leads the day. GO FRIARS.
