Drew Edwards’ Playoff Push

drewedwards

2015 Providence signee Drew Edwards and Calvert Hall (MD) take on a John Carroll team with a pair of D1 prospects tonight in the semifinals of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Conference A playoffs.

Calvert Hall is the #3 seed in the tournament and John Carroll is 5th, with the winner advancing to Sunday night’s championship game.

With the tournament approaching I caught up with Calvert Hall head coach John Bauersfeld earlier this week to see how Edwards’ senior season has unfolded. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Calvert Hall finished the regular season 24-5 and were co-champions of the always challenging Baltimore Catholic League. Edwards had a pair of 30+ point games this season and is averaging 15 points, five rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. His 30-point efforts came against Gonzaga High School and Linden High School.
  • Where has Edwards most improved this season? His coach said his ball handling has “improved dramatically” this year and that Edwards has gotten much better against pressure defense.
  • When asked to compare Edwards to a current college player, Bauersfeld pointed to Villanova’s Phil Booth, as both are “cerebral” players who can contribute in several different ways.
  • Bauersfeld called Edwards “a consistent force for us for the last three years.” He continued, “He is a calming influence for our team on the floor through his decision-making and feel for the game. His ability to pass the ball is one of his greatest assets that won’t show up in the scouting report. He sees the floor well and has a great understanding of passing angles.”
  • Off the court Edwards is a 3.2 student and a “very conscientious worker in the classroom at a demanding academic school.” His coach calls him “a true student athlete” and notes that Edwards is very close to Ed Cooley and their relationship is the main reason why he choose to attend Providence.

I also spoke with Bauersfeld in the preseason. For a more in-depth look at Drew Edwards you can read that article here.
