Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

New, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball (and other topics) while waiting for the Patriots to kick some butt tonight.

  • As Ed Cooley said, St. John’s may just have PC’s number this year, but the Friars would be hard pressed to win any game when LaDontae Henton goes 2-14 from the field and Kris Dunn has only one assist. The Friars just played a bad game. Time to move on.
  • I took the Friar bus up to the game yesterday and had a really nice time with some great Friar fans both on the bus and at the Garden. If you have never taken a school sponsored bus trip to an away game you should consider doing so in the future.
  • PC may not have the most fans of any college team in the country. PC may not have the loudest fans of any college team in the country. What PC does have, however, are fans who may be the most die-hard fans of any college team in the country. When PC went on their rally in the second half yesterday and cut St. John’s lead to two points Madison Square Garden sounded just like the Dunkin Donuts Center. This marks the fifth time this year that the PC fans have come up huge in a neutral court or away game setting. When you consider the actual size of the school this is amazing. PC fans are hard core.
  • It makes me wonder if the Red Storm will schedule next year’s game with PC at Madison Square Garden. The size of the crowd was very good compared to other games they play at the Garden, but they may want to play at Carnesecca Arena where the crowd won’t be 50% PC fans and they will have a real home court advantage.
  • As the game started yesterday two people in my section were selected to win the free seat upgrade contest. St. John’s sent two of their representatives up to our section and made a really big deal out of pulling these two fans out of our section and escorting them to the upgraded seats. Ten minutes later here come the two fans back up to our section to sit in their original seats. It seems that when they got down to their upgraded seats the St. John’s people would not let them sit there even though they won the contest because they were not St. John’s fans. Unreal! Meanwhile these two fans missed 10 minutes of game action with all this musical chairs nonsense. Memo to St. John’s. If this is going to be your policy going forward you may want to consider not having the winner come from a section where you allocated ALL of the seats to the opposing team.
  • Sir’Domonic Pointer — WOW! He is the real key to St. John’s, not D’Angelo Harrison or Rysheed Jordan.
  • Keno Davis would make a great coach in the D League. The last thing any of these guys want to do is play defense. A league that plays absolutely no defense should never be called the D League.
  • Bryce Cotton is long overdue for a call-up to the NBA and it should come soon. That being said, I don’t think Cotton can really stick up there due to his defense. I really hope I am wrong.
  • The annual National Prep School Invitational takes place starting this Thursday at Rhode Island College. There will be dozens of Friar recruits playing over the course of the four day event. Highlighting the event this year will be the participation of Thon Maker who may be the best high school player in North America, regardless of class. Once again Friarbasketball.com’s Kevin Farrahar and myself will be on hand to provide extensive live coverage of the event. ‘
  • Friarbasketball.com will have much more information on the Prep School Invitational over the next few days. In the meantime here is the schedule of teams that will be playing during the week.
  • Patriots 24 – Seahawks 21, Brady gets his fourth ring.

From a friars fan stand point its not take a step back one game then take 2 steps back next game ….teams needs to be consistent game in and game out
