Desrosiers Saving His Best for Last

It seems like only a few weeks ago that Carson Desrosiers transferred from Wake Forest to Providence College, putting a further stamp of approval on the program that Ed Cooley was trying to build at PC. Here was a player that was originally recruited by PC and loved the college, but felt something was missing from the basketball program. When Cooley was hired by Providence that ‘something missing’ had changed and PC became an easy choice when looking for a new college where he could finish his career.

That was three years ago. When Desrosiers takes the floor tonight he will only have 12 regular season games left in his college career. Where has the time gone?

Desrosiers seems determined to make the most of those last 12 games, as he is currently playing the best basketball of his career. Over the last three games Carson is averaging eight points, seven rebounds, and an impressive four blocks per game.

Desrosiers has always been a very good defensive player, but lately he seems to have taken his defense to another level. He has been intimidating other Big East teams with his low post presence. Talking about his defense Desrosiers said, “Defense is just attitude and effort, so that is something you can always control. Sometimes your shots are not going to fall, but you can always play defense.”

Offensively, Desrosiers has been more assertive and is looking for his shot. “I have always had a decent hook shot, ” Desrosiers said, “and it is improving. If the defense is going to give it to me, I am going to shoot it.”

As one of two senior leaders, Desrosiers is using his final year to be a leader and mentor for the younger players. “We have a fairly young team. As a senior, the younger players look up to you. I have played a lot of college basketball games. They haven’t, so when the other team goes on a run, I am going to bring them in, say we are fine. Thing like that,” he said.

One of the players that Desrosiers has been closely mentoring has been Paschal Chukwu. Chukwu and Desrosiers go head to head every day in practice and have made each other better players.

Commenting on Chukwu’s improvement during the course of the season Desrosiers said, “He has been getting better at a very high clip. Defensively he has always been talented, but the coaches are trying to get him to shoot a little bit. He can make 10-15 foot jumpers. He does in practice. He just needs to continue to get stronger, and that is something he does in the weight room.”

Tonight Desrosiers goes up against one of the best centers in the Big East, Matt Stainbrook. With his play of late Desrosiers has demonstrated that he is more than ready for the challenge.

With only six home games left in Carson Desrosiers’ career, Friar fans should come out to the Dunk and see him in action while there is still time.
