News, notes, and opinions on Friar basketball while waiting for tonight’s big game against the Creighton Bluejays

  • Many Friar fans have been wondering what has happened to Tyler Harris’ shooting touch. Let’s take a look. Last year his field goal percentage was .433 overall and .322 from the three point line. This year his field goal percentage is .435 overall and .333 from beyond the arc. Granted his free throw shooting is off from last year but it is still at a respectable 72%. He is also averaging 1.1 turnovers per game this year after averaging 2.1 turnovers per game last year. It may just be time to cut Mr. Harris a little slack.
  • Whenever I am watching a game on TV and notice that there is not much of a crowd I usually check later on to see what the attendance was. Inevitably the figure is greatly inflated, sometimes by several thousand fans. On the other hand, when I check the attendance after a PC game it is always at 1000-2000 less than I am expecting. It has been that way all year.
  • Right now Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology has PC as an eight seed playing Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of that game would then most likely get to play Gonzaga in Seattle, WA. PC needs either a higher or a lower seed to get out of that dreaded 8-9 slot and finally do some damage in the tournament.
  • What is the one thing I am not looking forward to if PC loses tonight? Reading the PC basketball message boards after the game. It seems there is a message board meltdown after every loss. I can’t imagine what it will be like after two losses in a row. The upside is that it means PC has a very passionate fan base. You have to take the bad with the good. Let’s hope the Friars pull out a victory and avoid another message board meltdown.
  • I could see Tuesday’s loss to St. John’s coming from a mile away. St. John’s has a very good team but had an 0-3 Big East record and were desperate for a win. It was going to be very tough to beat them, even at home. Unfortunately Creighton comes into tonight’s game with an 0-5 Big East record and also very desperate for a win. Sometimes the Friars can’t catch a break.
  • Over on Twitter Friarblog pointed out that last year PC defeated Creighton at home, lost to Marquette on the road, defeated Butler on the road, defeated Georgetown at home, and lost to St. John’s at home. As Yogi Berra would say “talk about Deja Vu all over again!”
  • Wonder what some of last year’s seniors are up to? Bryce Cotton is having a great year in the D-League, filling up the stat sheet for the Austin Spurs. Cotton is averaging 20 points and five assists per game. Oh, and of course, he is playing 40 minutes a game. Kadeem Batts is also having a nice season in the D-League for the Erie BayHawks. He’s averaging 9.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Brice Kofane is doing a good job at Monmouth, averaging 6.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game for the Hawks who are 5-2 in the MAAC.
  • Checking in on a couple other names from the past, Gerard Coleman is currently averaging a little over 20 points per game for the Georgetown (KY) Hawks while going 13 for 40 from beyond the three point line. Former PC coach Keno Davis is still coaching the Central Michigan Chippewas who are currently 12-2 and 2-1 in the Mid American conference.

It is not that Tyler isn’t shooting as well. It is the fact that he is lost on the court and usually is a just a body. He is way too soft and plays like he doesn’t care at all what happens!! And PC students say he is a prick on campus…

The Patriots success over the last 14 years has definitely hurt the Friars home attendance. No local sports talk shows doesn’t help either (WEEI ignores local college sports). I could have sworn there were more than 8,200 people there Wednesday, it definitely felt like more than that in the building.

Agreed on all points but if he can play the rest of the way like he did tonight it’s going to be a fun winter in Friar Town.
