Friar Basketball

Here and There in Friartown

News, notes, and opinions on PC basketball (and other related topics) while waiting for the Friars to start the Big East season.

  • At the beginning of the year many fans were outraged that LaDontae Henton was not included on many preseason first team All Big East lists. It turns out that if things progress the way they are going Friar fans will have a right to be outraged if both LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn are not on the first team All Big East squad at the end of the season.
  • There wasn’t much to not like about Monday’s victory against Miami. I had a great trip up to the game on the Friar bus along with the Cooley World Order and the Warrior Friar. We managed to behave ourselves for the most part even though we did not have adult supervision. The Barclays Center is a great place to play a basketball game and it really felt like a PC home game with about 4000-5000 Friar fans in attendance. When  they put the Cooley World Order up on the big screen while playing I am a real American I almost fell off my chair.  All in all a great day.

  • When both Henton and Dunn are on their games PC is a really tough team to beat. If this can happen on a consistent basis the Friars will be playing for seeding in the NCAA tournament at the end of the season instead of just playing for a chance to get in the tourney.
  • Don’t look now but the Big East has one less bottom feeding team. Sophomore center Luke Fischer has made a huge difference for Marquette since he became eligible and the Golden Eagles will be in the thick of the Big East race right up to the end.
  • Just how good has the Big East been during the non-conference season? Against the Power Five football conferences the Big East has gone 22-17. Not bad for a conference that was given up for dead by ESPN.
  • Over the past three games Carson Desrosiers has averaged 10 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks per game. Not only the key on defense, Carson is becoming a go to option on offense along with Henton, Dunn, and Tyler Harris.
  • One of the biggest problems the Friar program has had over the past couple of years is trying to schedule “home and home” games with high major teams. No big name national teams want to play PC at the Dunk. One possible solution for this may be to continue to schedule neutral court games at either the Mohegan Sun or at the Barclays Center. Both locations are great places to watch a basketball game and Friar fans have demonstrated that they travel well to both arenas. The games this year against Florida State, Notre Dame, and Miami felt like home games and getting a national team to play at either the Barclays Center or the Mohegan Sun would be the next best thing to getting them in the Dunk.
  • Look for the Friars to play more and more zone defense this season. PC’s “tall” lineup of Desrosiers, Bentil, Henton, Harris, and Dunn was particularly effective in the zone. If the Friars can hold their own on the backboards the zone defense could wind up stifling many Big East teams this year.

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that ESPN pretends the Big East doesn’t exist now that they have a contract with Fox Sports….
