PC Falls Flat at BC

BCLoss

Providence just can’t seem to win at the Conte Forum.

The Friars were unable to stop the veteran duo of Olivier Hanlan and Aaron Brown, and fell 69-60 in Chestnut Hill on Friday night.

It has now been over ten years since Providence won on BC’s campus, the last time coming when Ryan Gomes and the 24th-ranked Friars pulled out a 61-52 victory in February 2004.

This one stings more than almost any over the past decade, as Providence was expected to defeat a Boston College team projected to come in last in the ACC this season. But this is a BC team that has been sneaky competitive early, defeating New Mexico and leading for a majority of their 70-66 loss to #16 West Virginia in Puerto Rico.

After PC’s loss to Kentucky on Sunday, Ed Cooley said he would have thought Providence would have won if they held the Wildcats to 58 points.

What would he have thought had he been told that he’d get career highs from Kris Dunn (24 points) and Carson Desrosiers (15) five days later against BC?

Dunn was spectacular in keeping a groggy Providence team afloat. He made 10-13 shots, had six assists in the first half and came up with four steals while many of his fellow Friars struggled.

But Providence was playing uphill throughout this one, with their last lead of the game coming with roughly three minutes left in the first half.

Considering how competitive the Eagles have been early this season, perhaps a road loss should not be shocking, but the way it unfolded was unsettling.

A less than physical BC team out-rebounded Providence 40-29, and they were able to neutralize PC’s forward duo of Tyler Harris and LaDontae Henton, holding them to a combined 6-25 shooting.

The Eagles shot 50% from the field and could have broken this one open sooner had they not gone 16-28 from the free throw line. Hanlan once again torched PC, this time finishing with 24 points and eight rebounds on 8-12 shooting, while Brown had 16 and 7 on 7-12 from the field.

Conversely, Providence made just 39% of their field goal attempts and 6-20 from beyond the arc.

With the loss, Providence falls to 6-2 on the season with a pair of in-state rivals on tap next week. Brown comes to the Dunkin Donuts Center on Monday, and PC welcomes Rhode Island on Dec. 10.

Hopefully we win out at home in our non conference games, squeak out a W vs Miami in New York and take an 11-2 record into conference play. This loss does hurt but hopefully we won’t be worried about it come March.
