15 in 40: Ryan Fazekas Check-In

In the second edition of FriarBasketball.com’s annual “15 in 40″ series, Craig Belhumeur provides an update on 2015 PC commit, Ryan Fazekas who plans on taking his first official visit to Providence College on September 18.

It’s hard to believe, but nearly a year has passed since Ryan Fazekas (Michigan City, IN) verbally pledged to become Ed Cooley’s first member of the 2015 class. Since then, PC has added Alex Owens (Orlando, FL) and Drew Edwards (Towson, MD) to the list of newcomers due next fall. Set to make his first official visit to Providence College this weekend, Fazekas will be a part of a massive few days for Cooley and his staff as he will be joined by future classmate, Drew Edwards, and the Friars’ top target in next year’s class, Justin Robinson (Manassas, VA). fazekasinpost

Fazekas’ trip to Providence in a few days, will be his first of two in the next month or so. This weekend, labeled as his first official visit to the school (a visit financed in whole or in part by the college), will be his first trip back since making his decision to become a Friar in October of 2013. Back then, Fazekas shared, “I went up there, took two visits and I just felt like family. The coaching staff is amazing, they are a great group of guys, and I just felt like it is the right school for me.” Those comments came just after Fazekas attended Late Night Madness in 2013, an event he plans on attending again this year. After the official visit, Fazekas explained that his trip for Madness is an early birthday present from his parents.

With one year remaining at Marquette Catholic High School, Fazekas is focused on preparing his body for Division I basketball and helping his teammates defend a state title. A season ago, the future Friar poured in 34 points against number one seeded Barr-Reeve, in the state championship game. Draining 7 of his 11 attempts from beyond the arc, Fazekas snapped a 1A championship record for three point field goals made in a game. On top of his impressive scoring performance, Fazekas also managed to pull down 10 rebounds on the night.

Hoping to build on last season’s success, Fazekas’ summer schedule was jammed packed with basketball. Describing his AAU season as “crazy”, Fazekas had little time off during the summer months. Determined to bulk up and improve his ball handling skills, Fazekas began working out with Tim Anderson, a coach with the MeanStreets AAU organization in Chicago. In the past, Anderson has worked with players like Jabari Parker (Duke), Nik Stauskas (Michigan) and Jacob Pullen (Kansas State) – an impressive couple of names. “I’ve been working really hard this summer,” Fazekas said. “I’ve actually been putting on some weight from lifting and working with Tim has really helped me out. I’ve added some new moves to my arsenal that I am excited about too.”

With fazekasshoeslimited time off, Fazekas said that having some fun and spending time with this family was also important to him this past summer. When he isn’t in the gym or weight room, Fazekas lists fishing, golfing and selling basketball shoes as his favorite hobbies. Utilizing social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, Fazekas buys and resells rare basketball sneakers. “It has turned out to be quite the little business, he does really well with it,” his high school coach, Donovan Garletts shared late last year.

As his freshman year approaches, Fazekas is counting down the days until he can set his feet on the campus of Providence College. “It’s a far jump from Indiana but I am so excited to get out there. I honestly can’t wait to get to Providence and enjoy the college experience,” he said with enthusiasm. As it stands currently, Fazekas is unsure what he will declare his major as, but says that he interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement or business — law-enforcement because he would like to follow in his father’s footsteps and business because of early success selling shoes.

It has been a while since PC brought in a pure shooter from the get-go. True, Bryce Cotton finished his college career with incredible shooting performances, but that stemmed from four years of hard work. As it stands, Fazekas will join the 2015-16 Friars as a sure-fire deep threat, and he still has another year to improve on other facets of his game. Not to say that Fazekas will come in as freshman and put up Cotton like numbers – rather the point is, that his primary role will likely be to shoot the basketball. Recruited by Bob Simon, Fazekas could be the next under-the-radar gem that PC digs up.
