Top Target to Louisville

That was quick. Donovan Mitchell, long thought to be Providence’s top target in the class of 2015, committed to Louisville while on a visit Thursday night.

Friar fans had been sweating in anticipation of his visit to Louisville, but it turns out there was no need — this race was over before he ever left.

Over the last week the star guard cut his list down to 10, and then five, schools, but was quoted last night as saying he’d known he was going to Louisville for the past 10-14 days.

Mitchell’s decision especially stings for a Providence staff that identified him two years ago and made him a priority, while the Cards discovered him and started pursuing this summer as his stock exploded during an incredible July. It will be interesting to see how Ed Cooley and his staff respond.

They can’t be faulted for a young man deciding to play for a Hall of Fame coach at one of the elite programs in the country, but after a spring in which they unsuccessfully attempted to add a second guard in addition to Kyron Cartwright, there is concern in some corners of Providence about when and where the next commitment will come from. 11 months ago, Cooley responded swiftly from then-top target Abdul Malik-Abu’s decision to head to North Carolina State by landing an equivalent talent in Ben Bentil. Friar fans are hoping Cooley has a similar trick up his sleeve.

Make no mistake though, this one hurts.
