Recruiting Rankings: July 24

ChrisClarke

It’s the final week of the July Live Period. Here’s the latest on some of PC’s top targets.

Kevin Farrahar’s Recruiting Rankings for July 24:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy (NH), 6’3 combo guard, class of 2015: There’s been some question among Providence fans about the possibility of Mitchell playing point guard. When Craig Leighton and I first saw him after his freshman season two summers ago, the thought was that he could eventually turn into a physically punishing point guard with continued development. Scott Phillips of NBC Sports listed him as the top lead guard of the second week of the July Live Period in a recent recap, noting “There are better point guard prospects in the 2015 class, but nobody had a better week than Donovan Mitchell. Whether it was the elementary school day campers at Suwanee Sports Academy or national championship-winning head coaches, they all went nuts over Mitchell’s play this week.”

2. Terance Mann, Tilton School (NH), 6’5 SG/SF, class of 2015: Boston College is making a big time push for Mann, sending nearly their entire staff to each of his Peach Jam games last week. Got an invite to the Nike Global Challenge today as well.

3. Jarred Reuter, 6’8 PF, Brewster Academy (NH), class of 2015: Solid at the Under Armor Finals, averaging over 15 and 7 while shooting 62% from the field. I’ve been praising his passing skills for the past couple seasons, and ESPN’s Reggie Rankin called him the best low post passer at the event. More underrated skill for Reuter? The outlet pass. Threw them like a mini-Kevin Love when I saw Tabor upset Abdul Malik Abu and Kimball Union two seasons ago before Reuter went to Brewster.

4. Jalen Brunson, 6’1 PG, Stevenson High School (IL), class of 2015: More and more writers are calling Brunson the country’s best point guard. Tom Izzo and Jay Wright might agree — both were front row for the superstar from Illinois.

5. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy (TN), 6’6 SF, class of 2016: Jalen Lindsey redux? Lindsey’s former CPA teammate noted that he has 22 scholarship offers, but Providence, Vandy, Tennessee, Florida, Cal and Indiana are pushing the hardest. We’ll see if PC gets that summer visit Blackwell mentioned in May.

6. Chris Clarke, Cape Henry Collegiate School (VA), 6’6 SF, class of 2015: Kevin Ollie was on hand to watch Clarke earlier today. UNLV, Cincinnati, UConn, Florida State, Boston College and others have offered. Look up Clarke and one word keeps popping up: motor. He’s enjoying an absolute breakout summer for Boo Williams — the AAU program that brought you Josh Fortune and Rodney Bullock. Rugged defender.

7. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School (MA), 6’5 SF, class of 2017: The Hoop Group caught up with the young fella. Some highlights are mixed in here as well.

8. Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), 6’9 PF, class of 2015: The good news for Illikainen? Maryland is the latest school to offer him a scholarship. The bad? A broken nose at the Peach Jam has ended his AAU run. Iowa has also offered.

Craig Leighton’s Recruiting Rankings for July 24:

1. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy (NH), 6’3 SG, class of 2015: Donovan’s stock has risen as much as any player in the country during the July Live Period. He has received numerous new offers over the past couple of weeks and is now being recruited by some of the top blue blood programs in the country. The question is how many of these elite national programs have him as their top guard prospect? The Friars will remain in it to the end with Donovan because they have been recruiting him longer than anyone else, and because he is the Friars’ number one target at guard — not a backup option. Mitchell and his The City AAU team will be playing in the Las Vegas Fab 48 this week.

2Alex Illikainen, Grand Rapids (MN), 6’9 PF, class of 2015: Alex broke his nose last week at the Peach Jam and is shutting it down for the rest of the July Live Period. Instead, he is going to be concentrating on adding strength for the rest of the summer. The Friars’ chief competition for him will probably come from the Minnesota Gophers and Richard Pitino.

3. Jarred Reuter, Brewster Academy (NH), 6’8 PF, class of 2015: Jarred had another very solid week during the July Live Period last week and continues to pick up high major offers. The latest school to offer him is Florida State. Jarred and his New England Playaz AAU team are also playing at the Fab 48 in Las Vegas this week.

4. Jalen Brunson, Stevenson High School, 6’1 PG, class of 2015: I was able to catch most of the Mac Irvin Fire game last night at the Fab 48 on lifestream and Jalen Brunson is definitely the real deal. Possessing superior speed, ball handling ability, and passing skills, it is easy to see why many recruiting services have him as the top point guard in the country. Here are some highlights of Jalen in action:

5. Braxton Blackwell, Christ Presbyterian Academy, 6’6 SF, class of 2016: Braxton and his Atlanta Celtics AAU team will be playing this week at the Addidas Super 64 in Las Vegas. Rest assured that the Friar staff will be spending a lot of time watching Braxton this week. Braxton continues to mention PC as one of the schools recruiting him the hardest whenever he is asked.

6. Terance Mann, The Tilton School (NH), 6’6 SF, class of 2015: Terance and his BABC AAU team are playing in the AAU Nationals this week in Louisville, Kentucky. The Friar staff followed Terance very closely at last week’s Peach Jam and I expect they will do the same this week. Here is some highlights of him in action:

7. Jermaine Samuels, Rivers School (MA), 6’6 SF, class of 2017: Jermaine is playing this week at the AAU Nationals in Louisville with the Expressions Elite 11th grade team. He continues to remain one of the Friars’ top targets in the 2017 class.

8. Jared Wilson-Frame, Believe Prep, 6’5 SG, class of 2015: Jared is also at the AAU Nationals this week with Expressions Elite. He is a very interesting prospect at the SG position for the Friars and the PC coaching staff remains in close contact with him.
