Friar Basketball

Starting Five for May 13

News and notes from around college basketball that are of interest to Providence fans.

1. It looks like Gerard Coleman will finish up his college career somewhere other than Gonzaga. Coleman spent two productive, yet inefficient, seasons at Providence and after sitting out a year upon transferring he was largely the same player for Mark Few and the Zags. Coleman’s transfer does not come as a surprise, as he wasn’t seeing much playing time by season’s end and averaged 11 minutes per game.

Some reports have the former top 60 recruit transferring closer to his Boston home. Coleman was part of the same recruiting class as Bryce Cotton and it’s interesting to look back on how their careers progressed. Coleman was, at the time, the highest rated recruit to come to Providence in over a decade and Cotton was a late signee. Cotton nearly left PC after his sophomore season as well, but decided to stay and went on to be one of the all-time great Friars. Hopefully Coleman lands in a system in which he can get out and do what he does best — slash.

2. Craig Leighton’s review of the Providence Jamfest is worth a look if you haven’t seen it. I met Craig while watching recruits years ago, and while he’d be the last to say it, no one digs up as much information, or knows as much about PC recruits from all classes as he does.

3. If he’s going to keep listing Providence, we’ll keep talking about him. CoxSports recently had this feature on the outstanding Jalen Adams. As Craig reported yesterday, Adams mentioned Providence when listing schools this weekend.

4. As it currently stands, Bryce Cotton has not received an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine. In an article I wrote for Cox Sports this week I talked to two NBA scouts who explained why this invitation is so critical.

5. It’s never a bad time to look back on Providence’s Big East title season.
