Cotton Watch: Bryce Crosses 1700 Points

With 32 points last night, Bryce Cotton became just the ninth Friar ever to score 1700 points in his career.Cotton is now at 1,702 with eight regular season games to play, and if he maintains his average of 21.3 points per game he’ll find himself fifth on Providence’s all-time scoring list at the end of the regular season.

Cotton is now just 58 points shy of Ernie DiGregorio for 8th on the all-time scoring list (and yes, longtime PC fans, we recognize that Ernie D only played 86 career games and is one of only three Friars to average over 20 ppg for his career) with a trio of PC legends making up the 5-7 spots that could be attainable as well (Bruce Campbell 1809, Joe Hassett 1828, Marvin Barnes 1839).

Only three Friars have cracked the 2,000 point mark (Ryan Gomes, Jimmy Walker and Eric Murdock), but getting to 2,000 would be a very tall order for Cotton. Providence would have to play somewhere around six or seven postseason games for Cotton to realistically have a chance to get there.

Cotton also has a chance to catch Donnie McGrath for Providence’s career mark for three point field goals. McGrath connected on 274 three pointers, well ahead of Sharaud Curry who entered this season second at 207.

With six 3 pointers last night, Cotton has now made 239 in his career and would be right around the 275 mark if he makes roughly three a game and PC plays in three postseason games.

Cotton’s game has gone inside the arc more frequently as a senior (his 102 made two point field goals is already a career high — he made 97 last season), and he’s making 2.2 threes a night which would put him around 255 by the end of the regular season, so he’s less reliant on the three ball this year.

And just how reliant has PC been on Cotton this season? He’s scoring nearly 30% of the team’s points (.294) while leading the Big East in assists at 5.8. Only eight Friars have ever averaged six assists, while just eight Friars have scored 30% of the team’s points in a single season.
