Brandon Austin to Transfer

Brandon Austin will transfer from Providence according to a release sent from the college on Saturday evening. The three-time Pennsylvania state champion was the headliner of Ed Cooley’s 2013 recruiting haul, but never suited up for the Friars after being suspended from game action for violating the school’s code of conduct.

Austin was ESPN’s 56th ranked player in the class of 2013 and ultimately chose Providence over Connecticut and Texas. “We wish Brandon success with his basketball career and his academic future,” PC coach Ed Cooley said in a statement.

After a pair of difficult overtime losses and the suspension of Austin and fellow freshman Rodney Bullock, the past couple of weeks have been trying for Cooley and the Friars. The suspensions left Providence with just two healthy scholarship guards on the roster, and  with major holes to fill in the backcourt for next season as well.

As currently constituted, Providence has three guards slated for next year’s roster (Kris Dunn, Josh Fortune and Cleveland State transfer Junior Lomomba). Expect Cooley and his staff to try to add two guards this spring. PC’s staff was in attendance when New Jersey point guard Tarin Smith was playing in Massachusetts last week, and they’d clearly love to get involved with Brewster Academy point guard Devonte Graham, who originally signed a letter of intent with Appalachian State before deciding not to attend the school. If Graham is not released from his NLI then he’ll have to sit next season, which wouldn’t appear to be an appealing option for a program desperately in need of immediate help in the wake of Bryce Cotton’s graduation.

The prep ranks in New England are otherwise bare. Notre Dame Prep point guard Jarvis Garrett has had a huge season, and PC has been mentioned with him in the past, but beyond him pickings are slim locally. This staff hasn’t been limited to New England, however. Both of their class of 2013 adds were from outside of the region, and all three commits for next season are from outside of New England.
