New Video: Reliving the Non-conference Schedule

There certainly wasn’t a lack of storylines in Providence this year. While the statuses of injured sophomore Kris Dunn and the suspended freshmen often stole the headlines, the Friars were involved in a number of thrilling games in the non-conference portion of the schedule.

The season kicked off with Bryce Cotton torching Boston College in the first ever game on FoxSports1. The overtime win was a true team effort — capped by two free throws by Lee Goldsbrough that snapped a tie game with a minute left in OT, after three teammates had fouled out. Goldsbrough then stopped BC’s Ryan Anderson on the next possession to seal the victory for PC.

The highlight of the first semester came in the Virgin Islands, where Kris Dunn, Tyler Harris, LaDontae Henton and Carson Desrosiers led a furious second half comeback against Vanderbilt that saw them rebound from 16 down for a 67-60 win.

Providence escaped with victories over a pair of Ivy League teams (Brown and Yale), and got a stop on the final play of the game in front of a roaring Ryan Center to defeat URI after Kadeem Batts made the go-ahead free throw.

A pair of comeback efforts fell just short. PC trailed Maryland by 19 points before cutting the lead to just two in the final two minutes. More recently, they erased a 10 point deficit with under four minutes to go before losing a heartbreaker in overtime to UMass.

And, of course, they traveled to Brooklyn to take on Kentucky, where Cotton caught fire from deep.

The Big East season is upon us, and some of the distractions that lingered are in the rearview. The execution wasn’t always perfect (Ed Cooley believes the Friars “gave two games away”), but it’s hard to argue with the effort given through 13 games.

Providence is 10-3 as they head into the revamped Big East, but for now, here’s a look back at each of the games from the non-conference schedule.
