Friars Fall in Familiar Fashion to UMass

Henton_Umass

Well, that looked familiar. For the second season in a row Providence fell to Massachusetts on a last second put-back, this one coming with 1.1 seconds left on the clock when Derrick Gordon grabbed an ugly attempt by Trey Davis and flipped it back home for the score to lead the Minutemen to a 69-67 win in overtime.

Most aggravating for the Friars is that the 6’3 Gordon was able to grab the offensive board and score among the trees, following up UMass’s previous possession — another score off of a miss to put them up three.

The loss is a crushing one for Providence.

Massachusetts came into this game ranked #2 in the RPI and a road win would have wrapped PC’s out of conference schedule at 11-2 — and given them a huge RPI boost in the process.

Yet, the Friars were unable to capitalize on the momentum they carried into overtime. Providence trailed by 10 with under four minutes to play, and came roaring back behind Bryce Cotton who scored six late points in regulation, including a layup with roughly ten seconds left to tie it. Cotton had also fouled out Massachusetts’ star point guard Chaz Williams in the process, setting up an overtime session that seemed ripe for the taking.

But this is Providence and wins like these don’t come that easily here. The Friars haven’t beaten a ranked team on the road since 2004, in fact.

The overtime session was filled with mistakes.

There were the aforementioned offensive rebounds, a double dribble with under three minutes remaining, a needless over the back foul that sent a struggling UMass offense to the free throw line, and Providence missed three foul shots over the final 3:30, despite coming in as the best free throw shooting team in the country.

PC’s first field goal in overtime didn’t come until Cotton once again played hero — pulling up with 39 seconds left to bury a three to tie it once again. Prior to that shot Providence had gone just 1-12 from three point range on the night.

Cotton continues to play at a phenomenal level for the Friars. The senior guard scored 24 more points, made 7-8 at the free throw line, and had five assists, five rebounds and just two turnovers in playing the full 45 minutes.

Typically a good rebounding team, the Friars were handled by UMass on the glass, 45-36, and got out-rebounded 15-8 on the offensive glass.

Even on a night in which their highly publicized roster shortcomings were negated in overtime by the loss of UMass’s star, the Friars just couldn’t make enough plays to win what would have been a significant one on the road.
