First Half Reaction: UMass
- Updated: December 29, 2013
Quick hit thoughts as Providence leads 29-28 at the half at Amherst.
1. Dictating the pace. Massachusetts is averaging over 80 points per game, and it’s easy to see why. They’ve shot the ball well from deep and had a few thunderous finishes, but this game is playing at the pace PC wants. It’s not that Providence doesn’t want to run, but they are looking to be opportunistic, and they’ve chosen when to run perfectly in the first half.
2. Desrosiers at the rim. One thing PC didn’t have in their November loss to UMass last year was a presence like Carson Desrosiers at the rim. The seven footer has been a game changer early, blocking three shots and forcing the Minutemen to go up and under at times. UMass has made just 9-29 from two point range.
3. Medium range is there. While the Friars haven’t hit a three pointer (0-7), they’ve done damage on jumpers from a few feet closer. Bryce Cotton made three mid-range jump shots in transition, LaDontae Henton rolled one home early, and Josh Fortune gave PC the lead heading into the locker room with a 16 footer. Fortune has been quietly consistent from 16-18 feet this season — much more so than from three.
4. Harris filling it up. How’s this for a first half stat line for Tyler Harris? 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 assist.
5. O boards. Second chance opportunities have hurt the Friars. UMass grabbed 8 offensive boards in the first half.

It was a fairly intense first half not only for the players, but also for the fans. The attempt of risk was successful for one of the parties.
