Friar Basketball

PC By the Numbers

A look at Providence, the Big East, and the nation…

.398: The Friars are making just .398 from the field this year, not only the lowest mark of any team in the Big East, but the lowest mark of any high major team in the nation. That PC is 8-2 while struggling to this extent from the field is a testament to an improved defense (more on that later), and tremendous free throw shooting. PC’s 70.1 points per game is good for 10th in the Big East.

#2: Providence has been incredible from the free throw line. Their .807 mark is good for second in the country behind Boston College. Three Friars are making over 84% of their free throws this season, led by Bryce Cotton’s 90%.

0: The number of road games played by Georgetown, Villanova, St. John’s and Xavier this season.

43%: LaDontae Henton from 3 through 10 games.

62.0: While the offense has struggled, Providence is holding teams to just 62 points a night — good for first in the Big East. They are still only 7th in the conference in field goal percentage defense, thanks in large part to allowing Boston College to make over 50% of their shots and Kentucky over 60%. Just how good this team will be going forward is to be determined (Vanderbilt and LaSalle made 45% of their shots, but Maryland was in the low 30s), but Carson Desrosiers has been a force inside. If PC were to return Brandon Austin and Rodney Bullock it would go a long way towards adding depth and length on the perimeter.

(A Surprising) 1st: Cotton is quietly leading the Big East in assists at five a game.

18.6: Cotton’s point per game total – good for third in the Big East.

58: Free throws made by Cotton. That’s 10th nationally. Not bad for a kid who was a spot-up shooter as a sophomore.

0-1: PC’s record against teams ranked in the top 50.

2-0: PC against teams 51-100. The UMass game is looming larger and larger.

13.4: The Friars are third in the Big East in offensive rebounds. LaDontae Henton is third in the league in rebounding overall, while Kadeem Batts is fifth.

.449/11.5: Creighton is making nearly 45% of their three point attempts and hitting almost 12 a game.

32 and 15: Points and assists for UMass point guard Chaz Williams in their win over BYU on Saturday. The Minutemen are now 8-0.

4 for 12: Four Friars are scoring more than 12 points per game.

2.8: Blocks per game for Desrosiers. He’s second in the Big East behind St. John’s center Chris Obekpa, who averages a ridiculous 5.7.

17,559: Attendance per home game for Creighton. They are one of only two Big East teams averaging more than 10,000 fans a night. The other is Marquette at nearly 15k. Interestingly, newcomers Xavier and Butler round out the top four, while Providence is fifth.

16.2: Rebounds per game for UNLV’s Roscoe Smith heading into today’s game against Arizona. The former UConn forward is leading the nation in rebounds and has twice eclipsed the 20 board mark. Smith’s teammate, and former Friar recruit, Khem Birch is second nationally in blocks per at 4.7. He’s also been a consistent double double this year.
