Looking at Henton’s Hot Start
- Updated: November 19, 2013
At what point do we start to question if LaDontae Henton is more the .393 three pointer shooter that Friartown saw during his freshman year?
The junior forward is off to a blazing start from three point range this season (8-12, .666), and has made 8-11 over Providence’s last three games after shooting around 25% from deep last year.
Henton is very quietly off to a wonderful start to his junior season. He’s scoring over 17 points per game and pulling in 9.5 rebounds, while making more than 50% of his shots and 60% from three point range. He’s been selective when looking for opportunities from deep, and as a result Providence may have found a much needed weapon from beyond the arc.
While Bryce Cotton has uncharacteristically struggled from three point range (4-16), the Friars have gotten a lift from deep by Henton and Josh Fortune, as the latter has made seven 3 pointers in four games. Fortune has made big shots for the Friars throughout the first four, including a trio of 3s against Boston College, the game winner versus Brown and two more tonight versus Vermont — shots that helped turn an eight point lead into a 17 point advantage in a span of 80 seconds.
It’s a small sample size for Henton, and skeptics will point to the competition, but it’s worth noting that Henton was just 6-28 from three through four games last season. Perhaps that the key — not taking seven a game — but it’s worth noting that as a freshman Henton did his biggest damage from three against the Big East, making at least four 3 pointers in four different conference games.
Clearly, a return to his freshman year shooting form would be a big boost for the Friars.
