Desrosiers Worth the Wait for Friartown

Last night at the Dunkin Donuts Center, Providence defeated Boston College 82-78. One of the key contributors was junior transfer Carson Desrosiers, who finished the night with seven points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots in 22 minutes of action.

Yesterday afternoon Carson Desrosiers tweeted, “I’ve waited 20 months to finally say this…. GAMEDAY!!!!!!.” Last night Desrosiers proved that he was ready to go, showing no rust after the extended layoff while helping the Friars defeat the Eagles.

Last year the Friars may have lost this one. Kadeem Batts was off his game and in foul trouble, but Desrosiers was able to come in and provide a defensive presence and a legitimate offensive option in Batts’ absence. He was intimidating in the paint on the defensive end, blocking two shots and altering others. On the offensive side, he showed a couple of nice low post moves, and always had to be accounted for by the Boston College defense. Just as importantly, every time Desrosiers entered the game he energized both the team and the crowd with his intensity.

After the game Ed Cooley said “Carson was big-time today. He made his free throws, had a couple of and-ones (three point plays). He had some blocks. Coming out of the gate I thought he was going to be a little more rusty than he was, but he gave us a big time presence in there.”

Desrosiers was clearly not intimidated by the big time lights of a prime time national TV game against an ACC opponent. Going forward it should be interesting to see what Batts and Desrosiers can do out on the floor together for extended periods of time. They could cause some real match-up problems for opposing teams.

Coming into the season most Friar fans were feeling that newcomers Brandon Austin and Tyler Harris would have the biggest impact on the court, but on Friday night it was Desrosiers who made the difference. He was a consensus top 100 player who never quite lived up to expectations at Wake Forest, but he may wind up being the big surprise for this year’s Friars.
