10 Things You Should Know about Ben Bentil

Want to learn more about the newest Friar? Here are ten things you should know.

1. The 6’8 Bentil is a soccer player at St. Andrew’s High School in Delaware – and reportedly a good one at that. He’s an imposing scoring forward on the pitch and credits the game with helping his footwork in basketball.

2. He plays for Terrell Myers at St. Andrew’s who is a former professional basketball player in Europe who played at St. Joseph’s in the mid-90s.

3. Naturally, there have been many comparison between Abdul Malik Abu, the former Friar target who committed to North Carolina State. The two met in the final of the “Live in the AC” AAU event in July when coaches could watch recruits play and Bentil’s team came away with a 59-49 win. Bentil was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, while Abu had 15.

His high school and AAU teammate, point guard Austin Tilghman, had 15 in the game, while another former PC recruit, Jared Terrell, was limited to just one.

4. When asked to compare Abu and Bentil, ESPN’s Paul Biancardi came back with this:

Great question, as both Abdul Malik-Abu and Ben Bentil are ESPN 100 recruits and terrific, prototypical power forwards who possess many similarities. First, they are both physically strong and powerful and play the game the same way — with intensity and toughness. They understand who they are on the floor, which is so important to reaching one’s potential. They are best in the paint and at the rim scoring with power, especially loud dunks, rebounding with two hands, defending and blocking shots.

Where the separation begins is that Malik-Abu has improved his skill level and can score now facing up to where he is a threat with a short jumper and even an occasional 3-pointer or drive from the high post.

Most coaches would love to be in the position to have either player. If I had to pick one for my team, it would be Malik-Abu because he is more productive due to his improved scoring skills.

5. Bentil averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds last season.

6. Andre Lafleur recruited him this summer.

7. Bentil’s commitment to Providence bumps 247 Sports’ ranking of Providence’s 2014 haul to #8 nationally, while they are certain to see a significant bump from their #20 standing on ESPN when their rankings are updated.

8. He was ranked as high as #31 nationally by Rivals last December.

9. Academics are signifiant to him. In an interview with NBE.com last year he shared the following thoughts:

“First of all, I just really [want] great academics. Studying is one of my big priorities, so that’s what I want to look at first.

“I don’t know. It’s all up to my mother,” Bentil explained. “I got to talk to her first and I don’t want to commit basically [just because] of basketball. I just want to commit [because] of looking at the academic stuff. I’m still unsure, I wanted to major in business management, but I’m still kind of unsure if I want to do that.”

“Since I was growing up I’ve always wanted to be a person that tried to invest in something and make a lot of profit out of it,” Bentil said. “So I think business management if kind of a [road] to go and it can help me in the future after basketball is over.”

10. He also told NBE that he has a 3.4 GPA.
