Abu, Terrell Opt for Others

That Jared Terrell ended up committing to Oklahoma State wasn’t much of a surprise, nor did it sting Friartown in the same way that Abdul-Malik Abu’s pledge to North Carolina State did during their joint press conference on Saturday afternoon.

I’d written a week ago that Terrell appeared to be headed to Oklahoma State, and while there was still hope in Kingston that Rhode Island could make a final push with a visit from Terrell this week, reports began rolling in prior to today’s presser that he would, indeed, be a Cowboy. Cincinnati had backed off recently, and Terrell did not visit there, while the Friars seemed to drift out of the Terrell sweepstakes in the weeks following his visit to PC in early-August.

Abu’s recruitment was more difficult to predict throughout, but late visits to NC State and Florida this week took whatever suspense might have been left for Providence fans hoping one of the top power forwards in the class of 2014 would pop for PC on Saturday.

Ed Cooley had been hot on the trail for Abu for over a year, but the Wolfpack made a late run beginning this summer and landed the big prize today.

The commitments of ESPN’s 32nd (Jalen Lindsey) and 58th (Paschal Chukwu) ranked players in the class of 2014 certainly softens the blow for Providence. We’ll have more on what direction PC could take next in the coming days.
